Re: Minor incident with another CHL'er today

Thanks TAM. You broke down so it wasn't a rambling narrative and made it more understandable.

At work so far so good, but based on the employer's questions they are still considering their course of action carefully. Out of the blue she expressed concern about the reduction in chl training requirements just passed by the legislature. That concern was based on what "trained NY City police officers did last year when they hit several bystanders when shooting at a gunman". She's afraid of that scenario being repeated or worse with lesser trained chls. I tried to assure her that Texas chls have a very good record in their responses to shooting situations and that we don't normally pursue assailants as those police were doing. Our first responsibility is the safety of innocent lives around us. She knows a lot about my background and has a certain amount of trust in my judgement. She did say a lot of what I told her made a lot of sense.

I was never blaming the instructor. It was just making conversation and wondering if I knew the instructor. I now know who the instructor is but I will only bring it up in a generic conversation with no names or specifics. Not as a complaint or accusation. As TAM expressed it could be used as a teaching aid. I know my instructor was interested in the generic details when I talked to him last night.

Re: Minor incident with another CHL'er today

First of all I didn't even realize the other employee had noticed me watching the CHL til he told me he had seen the gun and had told the employer. My initial plan was to wait til he (CHL) went outside and discreetly approach him especially since he was an occasional customer. I went into damage control mode when the police were mentioned.

My purpose for the instructor question was to see if it was one I knew. It wasn't. He readily answered with a name from a nearby town to the south. In the aftermath of questions I forgot the name but I'm sure I can find it out. It is a real small town. The guy had a couple of other misconceptions that didn't speak well for his CHL knowledge or maybe he was nervous and just talking to much.

Minor incident with another CHL'er today

A gentleman walks in the store today and I notice the square black case on his right side. His shirt was fully tucked in. As he walks away it's very clear that it is a gun butt openly visible from the rear. A co-worker see's me looking and notices it also. He immediately went and told the owner's daughter who manages the store. She get's very nervous and wants to call the police. I asked her to let me approach the man and work it. I approached him on a side aisle and ask him if he was a peace officer. He said "no sir". I said you do know that open carry is unlawful in this state. He said he has a chl and that a state trooper said his method of carry was okay and that there was no 3006 on the door. :bigmouth I advised him that from the rear the gun butt was readily visible and easily identifiable as a gun. He then pulled it out and placed it in his back pocket. Also stated that he had been carrying it in post offices and many other places and no one had noticed before :eek6 . I made idle chit chat with him as I checked him out and asked the name of his CHL instructor.

After he left I was able to talk the owners out of putting up the 3006 sign but she said it made her nervous to be around someone with a gun. She also wanted know why I knew so much about the CHL requirements. I told her that my past in doing security/body guard work required it. She also asked if I would tell her if I was carrying. I said don't ask the question unless you really want to know. She then said that if anyone was carrying that she would prefer it to be me. All in all it didn't do us CHlers any favors and raised an issue in my work place that didn't need to be raised. I may still get official 3006 notice in the near future. :waiting:
