After reading the text of the bill three times I am inclined to say this is (at least on the face) mostly benign. It seems to just make states report things to the database that they should have already been reporting. I don't think it will do much either way. But as Mr. Cotton said it is doing "something" when the whole of the US was crying for "something" to be done.
I think a better "something" should be to have armed guards. But that is probably too pie in the sky.

Wow. What was I thinking? There is no possibility here that the fed will use this arbitrarily. We can simply ignore all of the discussions on the fed ignoring constitutional rights to kill US citizens without warrant, without due process.
Good bill? With this administration? The term is oxymoronic. This government wouldn't know good legislation if it kissed them on the forehead.

As I recall the soviets used "mental illness" to detain/disappear many of their opponents. I don't trust these wretches, not one inch. This is how it could go down. They grab a 2nd amendment blogger on some trumped up charge, find them mentally incapable of standing trial, and like magic all his guns are taken away and he is never permitted to own them again. All done without that person having any recourse......not good.

I don't love it. I think there is tremendous potential for abuse in this situation. However, I am surprised that this was not already part of the background checks that exist today. Additionally I don't see that this is going to stop a determined killer. As we have seen time and time again if they can't get them legally they will steal them, or get them from the black market.
