great forum and great discussion, looking forward to much more

well, plans on the 3.8 fell through and I am now back in the shopping process.....only 3 places to buy handguns here in town, one being Academy*gasp* had some medical issues come up and have to drop my handgun budget a bit.........any suggestions on a semi-auto in the 300-400 dollar range that I could trust the lives of my family on?
Well, lets start with the basics: Do you have a caliber preference?

Not sure what your opinion of Taurus is, but I have heard a lot of great things about the PT-709 slim. Easily concealable, 9mm ammo is cheap at the range and can get the job done... If you're looking for something like a .45, and don't mind Taurus, the PT-145 does that. Having shot one (1 magazine at the range-- I asked the guy next to me if I could shoot it), it tries to jump out of your hand, but I'm sure with practice it isn't bad...

Other than that, there's always the Bersa .380...

Sometimes the SigPro 2022 can be found for $399 or so... might be worth a look...

And that said, I'm out of ideas without looking at a gun store's shelf...

Wow! a Glock and a 1911  ...So which side will you be on
during our friendly little Glock vs 1911 debates?
Like I said, depends on a lot of things. Each has its place. I like the glock for shorts and a T-shirt (I'm 165 pounds and 6'1, if that helps...) in the summer, but if I'm in jeans, wearing any shirt tucked in, or am going to be around other gun nuts, I ALWAYS bring the 1911. The XD was my first pistol, and it gets used mostly for open carry on the ranch while hunting pigs. Makes a great truck gun, too. I'm sure it would make a great carry gun, but I can't afford a 3rd nice holster as of yet, so it's the one that came with it for now.

I did a search for "milt sparks" last night, didn't get any hits (unless I was too tired and typed it wrong), so does nobody else here have a milt sparks? I've got the Summer Special for my glock and a Versa-Max II for my 1911. Got the idea from a few friends at academy that have had CHL's for a long time, and I could almost never spot theirs. I tried them on, and carried them around the house one day, and found the retention dead on perfectly balanced between keeping it snug and getting it if you needed it, and they ride in a great spot. Only downside is the cost and wait time, but I found a 3rd party seller that had one in stock...

oh-- FWIW, I respect what Glocks are capable of. Yeah, I've seen the torture tests, and they're brutally simple... However, I find the artwork of Mr. John Moses Browning incredible, ingenious, and Colt should quit screwing with it and go back to Series 70, 1911A1, or the 1911...That said, I've got a knockoff 1911 until I can afford the Series 70 I've got my eyes on, so if you're got a series 80 or 90, you've still got a better 1911 than me...

Last note in this vichyssoise of verbiage, I like the ability to customize the 1911... grips, wilson combat/ed brown parts inside, etc... the things I'll be doing to that series 70 when I get my hands on it...
