...personally, I'll go with the Law Enforcement community who works there rather than the folks who're trying to encourage me to move there or start my business there... "best places" as an example...
...as far as "someone who lives there"...I can pick four of my neighbors within two blocks...three of them won't have any idea of how many police calls have been made here, or the drive-by shooting at the drug house, or the man who shot up his house and his family had to run for their lives...often one's perception of what's really going on nearby is clouded by what time they go to bed or how loudly the TV is turned up...the folks who get off at five oclock couldn't make it on the same street at 10 that night...
...no sense in our continuing to argue...we're not going to come to agreement...have a nice evening...OP's headed to East Texas...where mosquitoes are king!!!

Re: Going to Big Bend to camp
...probably not...all those law enforcement warnings and ratings are probably just a trick to get more donuts...and this report is probably totally unsubstantiated, too...http://www.bestplaces.net/crime/zip-cod ... park/79834" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; please...I'm glad your experiences have been wonderful...but if there was truly little crime there...the reports wouldn't include Big Bend...and it wouldn't be rated so high on the dangerous list by professional LEOs...people need something between Chicken Little and Pollyanna to make decisions where to take their families...that's part of why they do these reports and put these warnings on the Park website...there's reason to beware...

Re: Going to Big Bend to camp
...I have no interest in going there...but I'm sure if you researched it some, you'd find the incidents that they made these reports with...you KNOW you can trust your government...why would they publish such things, knowing it'd keep some folks away...and they'd have less work to do and expense...it's moot for me but those who're considering going somewhere need to have the truth...and then they can make an informed decision...
