Re: Mosul falls to ISIS

ISIS destroys shrines and mosques, may be targeting Mecca

Mostly comprised of Sunnis, ISIS surprised few when it vowed to destroy sites revered by the rival Shia sect. The two main blocs of Islam have been at odds for nearly 1,400 years because of a dispute over who was Prophet Muhammad's successor. The destruction of at least 10 ancient Shia shrines in Iraq has enraged the Shia government in Baghdad, as well as the Iranian regime, also Shia.

But an unverified threat to Mecca itself, the holy city in Sunni-dominated Saudi Arabia where Muslims believe they must make one pilgrimage during their lifetimes, was unprecedented. Allegedly tweeted by a member of the extremist group on a since-suspended account, the threat took aim at the most sacred beacon of the Muslim faith.
Sunni v Shia makes Protestant v Catholic look like a schoolyard shoving match.

Not having a good grasp of the history or the geopolitical ramifications (not sure anyone can make any good predictions on the geopolitical side), the only side I can root for here is peace. It all seems so horribly, tragically, avoidable.

Re: Mosul falls to ISIS

The Kurds are having none of it....
We should be supporting their efforts and leading the charge for them to have their own country at the end of this mess.
Let the Sunni's and Shiia have at each other all they want, the only caveat would be for Iran to stand down (yeah, I know, wishful thinking).

The Kurds of Iraq have the right to decide the future of their land, said Huseyin Celik, a spokesman for Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) on Friday.
“The Kurds of Iraq can decide for themselves the name and type of the entity they are living in,” Celik told Rudaw in an interview to be published soon…
In case Iraq gets partitioned, said Celik, “the Kurds, like any other nation, will have the right to decide their fate.”

Even assuming we had nothing to do with it (which is not true). A friend is being over run with people some native, most not, who are chopping the heads off of thousands of citizens in an effort to overthrow a lawfully elected governement and we choose to sit on our hands and say "not our table." Nice friend we are.
An honorable sentiment, beyond a shadow of a doubt.

Malikis government, however, is not known for being kind to the local minorities. Not sharing power is just the tip of that iceberg. All of this was avoidable with a status of forces agreement, but now that we are where we are, choosing to bomb Sunnis to protect Shiia sectarians is not so cut/dry.

Clearly BHO is to blame for the terrible policy that brought us here.

200 US civilian contractors trapped at A surrounded Iraq air base. Working for department of defense.

Taking small arms fire and RPG's from ISIS. So far holding. So far US military not helping to evacuate.
If true, I have to ask.....is the Head Clown deliberately wanting to look weak, foolish, and gutless? How does the clown posse think it's going to play politically if ISIS captures a bunch of Americans working for the military, parades them around on television, then lops off their heads?
Ask Ambassador Stevens?
I think he might quote another Clown Posse member and say "What difference, at this point, does it make?"
