Re: 05-October: MEDICAL Training/TFR Trauma First Response

We had an even dozen people show up for class, one gal from as far away as Houston.!
(I hope she made it home safely, that's a long day)

I've received mostly positive feedback about the class and I, too, felt it was a good use of my time and money. As it turned out, the class was mostly lecture with some good ad-hoc hands on late in the day, covering basic CPR with an opportunity to try out some airway management appliances. My only small criticism would be that I would have liked to have some additional hands-on time with dressings, tourniquets and such. I've thankfully never had the need to apply a pressure bandage, etc.. If the class is done again I'd work with them specifically on adding this to the class. I've already given them that feedback.

On the plus side I thought the instructor was excellent (although a bit sleepy, coming off a 12 hour graveyard shift). I thought he covered the material at a manageable level (most everyone in the class had only basic First Aid/CPR), without "dumbing it down" too far or going over anyones head. Clearly the guy knew his stuff. I would not hesitate to take another class he was instructing.

"Serious Student" (from pistol-forum.com) passed along a link for an online purchase of the full PHTLS book for $1.99 plus shipping (shipping was $3.99 for me, total $6.47 including tax, shipped). The class we took was TFR, which is a subset of PHTLS. For such a low price, you get the full PHTLS text. Easy decision. Here's the link.... Thanks to Serious Student. LINK.

SS is also working on a "bullet card"... A summary of critical points to keep handy (maybe laminate and keep together with a basic trauma kit?). As soon as that's available I'll post here and let you know how to get a copy.

If you're ever looking for an interesting place to eat near Berry St and I-35W, I enjoyed Angie's Bikkles. Very nice lady running the place. She was happy to have us and I can vouch that the goat curry and oxtails are both excellent.

Thanks again to everyone who attended.!

Macara sent me a note last night that Brian White will instruct the class.
She didn't say why the change.

Just FYI..

Re: 05-October: MEDICAL Training/TFR Trauma First Response

Just an FYI.

I rode over to the training location today and as far as I could see it is NOT posted 30.06.
The doors were heavily tinted so I could not see if anything was posted in the entryway, but I didn't see anything on the outer doors.

Looks to be plenty of parking.

Re: 05-October: MEDICAL Training/TFR Trauma First Response

Quick update.

As of this morning we have 10 registered and 8 paid, so, the class is a GO.!
I've asked them to let me know if we get close to maxing out, but it appears not to be a concern at this point.
(We had nearly 30 people raise their hand [here plus pistol-forum.com], we'll see if we get a last minute rush as we get closer to class day)

I'll make a trip down to the class location in the next week or so and report back whether the location is 30.06 posted.
I thought it best not to ask. It's easy enough to go say hello and find out.

Instructor is recommending bringing a notepad and a sweater, and noted that we'll be working skills on the floor so dress comfortably.
Given that we're still running in the upper 90's, I took that to mean they like to keep the AC turned down pretty low.

We'll have an hour break for lunch. They have a toaster oven and microwave at MedStar, or there are restaurants nearby, mostly fast food and Mexican. I'm planning to check out a local Carib place just down the street (walking distance, looks like).

As mentioned before, I also plan to bring a printout of my registration and payment confirmation, just in case of a clerical error.

Cheers.

I don't get to downtown FTW very often, so I've not had a chance to swing by and check.
They are not listed on Texas3006.com, but that's not a guarantee, and I've been hesitant to ask them directly, for fear of giving them the idea.

Does anyone reading this work/live near this location? Can I talk you into doing us a favor and checking it out?
If there's no confirmation in the next week or so, I'll take a ride down and check it out myself.

Re: 05-October: MEDICAL Training/TFR Trauma First Response

Good question Chief.

When I registered, I printed the registration confirmation for my records.
When I paid, I received a receipt via email as well.
I plan to bring these to class, just-in-case.

Other than that, you should be good to go... About the only possible problems I can see are..
1. We fail to hit the 8 minimum.
2. Something unforeseeable ... Instructor gets sick... etc.

Probably a god idea to check in here occasionally for updates.
As soon as we have 8 paid, I'll let everyone know we can cross that potential problem off the list.

Thanks.!

I'd like to get to 8 paid ASAP, so the class is locked in (minimum number of students is met)
If you're sure you'll be attending, your registering and confirming with payment would be appreciated.

Thanks.!
Good Thursday Folks....

As of last night I'm told we still have 9 registered and 5 paid.

I sure would like to get to 8 paid ASAP, so the class minimum is met, and allowing folks to confirm their plans for class day.

If you're planning to go, please go ahead and get your payment taken care of so we can be assured the class will get the green light.

Thanks.!

PS: When I paid a few weeks back, everything went smoothly with Leslie... no problems.

Kadelic wrote:just curious if bringing my own kit for specific questions would be welcomed or not appropriate for the setting.
I don't see the harm, as long as you're cognizant about not taking up too much class time on specific-to-you type questions. I'm sure there will be some time for Q&A (certainly during lab time) and a few questions about different types of kit component options would (IMO) be good fodder for discussion.

Just to be clear.. I am not the instructor... just the organizer and a fellow student.

I'll keep a running list of questions and submit them the week before..

Thanks.!

Re: Gauging Interest: MEDICAL Training/TFR Trauma First Resp

OK... I finally have registration clarified.... Unfortunately it's a 2-step process... Although not very difficult.

1. Register on the NAEMT web site. LINK HERE
The link will take you to a page titled "Locate a Course". Don't worry, you're on the page for the actual class. No need for searching.
At the bottom of the page you should see this......
Image

Make sure it says "Trauma First Response"
Then click the link "Sign up for this course here"

Fill out and submit the registration. You do not need to fill in any of the EMT/License/etc. stuff if you are not in the EMT business.
I don't know whether any of you can use this for CE (continuing education) credit.... You'll need to figure that one out on your own.
If you find out anything useful, please post it here.

2. Call them to pay
Company is MedStar EMS.
Contact: Lesley Palmer
Phone: +1-817-923-3700
Payment can be made by credit card, or you can mail a check.
Payments need to be received by 30-September.

Other registration details:
- We need at least 8 to confirm the class.... If you're sure you're coming, please register sooner, rather than later so we can lock in the class.
- Capacity is 20 students. I've had indications of interest from roughly 30 people, some of them have indicated they would like to bring friends/coworkers.
- I have no idea what happens when a bunch of people on the internet say yes to a class.... I'm confident we'll have the minimum, I'm concerned we'll be oversubscribed.
- IF you get closed out of registration.... and you're sure you want to come.... Please post in this thread... Tell me the number of people you are sure want to come. Once we're over by 10 or so I will ask them to set up another class for the following weekend, 12-October. There's no guarantee that a 12-October class will happen.

Other class details:
- I've requested that a CPR/AED "refresher" be added to the class. They've agreed to do a 20-minute session (I've never touched an AED, so, I'm in for that).
- Start time will be 09:00, plan to finish around 18:00 (6:PM for us civilians).

Post here if you have any questions. I'll do my best to answer...
Also please post here after you've registered and paid, so I know where we're at, headcount-wise.

Thanks.!

The 5-October date is confirmed.
Registration will be via the NAEMT web site.
As soon as the class is posted there I'll put up the link here and you'll be able to register.

Sorry for what feels to me like a long process... I really wanted to be out of the money handling loop, otherwise I would have just done it via EventBrite.com for what works out to an additional $3.50 in fees... Regardless.... I should have a registration link for you any day now.
