To those people I say...chasfm11 wrote:I've not ever met one of them for whom rationality was a consideration. All of the ones that I've talked to about guns are so conflicted within their own thinking that any attempt to be rational would make their heads explode. They simply dismiss any fact that doesn't support whatever current statement they are making and most of them refuse all factual references. Their feelings are all that they need or want. I was once told that I would never understand because I had no feelings and was simply cold and calculating. That was right after she said "and if it saves just one life, it is worth it." Balance isn't a consideration for them either. Weighing one set of bad consequences against a worse set of consequences isn't something they can handle. Such things are not part of the code of unicorns.Dave2 wrote:I think the point is that at least some of them will realize their position isn't rational.SF18C wrote:Not sure I really want to "help" the gun grabbers refine or improve their argument...their intent will not change.
They will just be a little wiser about how to get the way.
"Have you ever tried shooting a gun of any kind?"
When they say "no" (sometimes it comes out with shame, sometimes with conviction), I say "call me if you'd ever like to try, I'd be happy to teach you the basics in a safe environment". Then I change the subject. No use fighting with someone who isn't willing to listen. They just dig in their heels. Better to let them think about it for a while. They will certainly go home questioning whether they should give it a try. Even if they never do, you've made a chip in their mortar and tiny as it may be, their illogical position now rests on a wall that is slightly less strong. Think of it like water making a canyon. It only SEEMS impossible.
Like I said above, winning the middle is the goal. Honestly, I've not found it hard to discern between the hard left and the middle folks on this issue. I've found a LOT of middle. Maybe since I don't take it personally when I meet an anti, I see it as their fault, their ignorance. I think of them like I do children, in need of guidance, a steady hand, a better example to follow.
