Chuck, the confrontation you describe makes your original post a bit more clear. I'd say that I would have (and have) done the exact same thing in a similar scenario.

I've never unholstered my firearm in a carry situation. I've checked it or shifted myself to be in a better position to draw if necessary once or twice, but never felt the need to draw the weapon as the situation played out. I've always gone by the thought that "if it's bad enough to draw a weapon, it's bad enough to use that weapon."

Drawing a weapon ahead of a potential but unrealized confrontation may be seen as being prepared in your own mind, but it may also be seen as unreasonable, looking for trouble, or unprovoked escalation in a jury's mind.
