Re: 1984
The Statists -- under the banner of Progressives, Marxists, Socialists, Communists, or any other name -- are clever and their incrementalist (taking small bites out of Liberty and individualism) playbook doesn't really change that much, but the terms they use evolves. With the direction education has taken under "No Child Left Behind" and similar programs, critical thinking is passe, and the changes in terms obfuscate the real meaning and impact of things such that relatively few public school graduates understand the real stories. Examples: "Affordable Healthcare" really isn't. "Economic Stimulus" isn't really that great a thing, particularly for the future. "Common Core" is devoid of common sense. Last, but certainly not least, is how "deficit" is always reported by the media in positive terms and rarely do we really hear anything about "debt". 1984, Animal Farm, Brave New World and the like may still be on reading lists, but learnings correlating these works with real-world policies seem too often to be missing.
