Me too, learned the hard way. I have bought some great deals at gun shows only to get home and find they have personal issues I gotta fix.

Re: *UPDATED 1911 catastrophic failure PIC (gunsmith dfw?)
Thanks! noted, I'd check that if the recoil assembly would somehow come out...SC1903A3 wrote:The first picture is an FTF. I had the same problem that was caused by an improperly tuned extractor.
edit- got the gun apart. nothing visibly is out of the norm.

Re: *UPDATED 1911 catastrophic failure PIC (gunsmith dfw?)
Let me add a little info.
Here is what my work order said they did:
1911-A1 CH/COMPT. REC. SP. PLUG, OLD
1911-A1 CHAM/C0MPT REC. SPRING GUIDE
1911-A1 COMPACT RECOIL SPRING 24#
TESTED
I guess I should be more clear. The gun is loaded with 7rd mags. I chamber and fire the first round. Somewhere between round 2-7 the "new" round is improperly loaded, setting the gun out of battery and a round is not flush in or with the barrel, rather it is up at an angle. I tried 4 different types of mags.
This is the closest example I could recreate safely at home with a live round. The angle is probably a little bit higher, like closer to 45 degrees!
Sometimes like this also.
And last but not least... I went to take a peek inside the gun... and used the SA 1911 "tool" to take the bushing off. Look closely at the pic, (why does the recoil assembly not "shoot" out under pressure? How can I get it out??

The work order says it was test fired. I shot 4 different mags, loading each one at least twice (>50 rds or so) and could not get a SINGLE stream of 7 shots to preform without at least 1-2 stovepipes.rm9792 wrote:Do they even bother to test fire?
I will post a picture of the "new" recoil stuff soon vs the old full-length guide rod

Re: *UPDATED 1911 catastrophic failure PIC (gunsmith dfw?)
UPDATE:
Got the gun back a week or two ago, just took it to the range. Guess what? Stovepipes, jams, etc.
Springfield JUST had this in the factory and replaced the barrel bushing and swapped my full length guide rod for a different recoil setup....
Ammo used today was Lawman .45 230gr and I had three shooters try the weapon to ensure I wasn't "limp-wristing" it.
REALLY upset with Springfield at this point....

Re: *UPDATED 1911 catastrophic failure PIC (gunsmith dfw?)
Thanks for the replies above! To note, I was using cheap TULA ammo (yeah, I know) , so if anything the round would likely be underpowered.
Round count= no clue, it appears to be a few years old, the barrel has some wear (as pictured above)
I'm going to call Springfield tomorrow and see if they will resolve the issue. I will post an update!

Re: *UPDATED 1911 catastrophic failure PIC (gunsmith dfw?)
Thanks for the responses. I guess I do not have a bull barrel after all (I=1911 noob). The end of my barrel (like 1/2 inch) is wider than the rest, you can feel a "lip" where it begins to open up, slightly. So whatever that is called, I have that, haha. If anyone wants pics I can post em'.
Regarding fitting, the bushing was extremely tight, so tight that I had to use a bunch of force with one of those removal tools to get it off, before it broke.
edited to add, the "bull" part starts where the discoloration starts, I would say it BARELY has a ridge on it (like <1/10 inch), rather than most smooth/flush barrels.

Re: *UPDATED 1911 catastrophic failure PIC (gunsmith dfw?)
Thanks! I will try to get quality work done on this gun and get her working well. I am half tempted to just call Springfield and have them fix it.stroguy wrote:Wow, your bushing went kaplow. Best of luck getting her up and running. Don't be to frustrated, there's a reason they have been around for 100 years. Give the gunsmith a look see and get the 411 on a fix.
Also, just took the guide rod off of the spring and noticed the spring is now bent

*UPDATED 1911 catastrophic failure PIC (gunsmith dfw?)
Updated 2/13/2012 I will never buy another Springfield product. Details of events are on page 3.
Springfield Champion catastrophic failure
Today I loaded a mag with factory .45 ammo. Round 1=Bang, 2=Bang, 3=Bang then round 4 came....
Fired round four and had a catastrophic failure. The barrel bushing broke, sent all the pieces under the barrel 'shooting' out several yards (spring, plug, guide rod etc).
lost the plug and prongs from the barrel bushing (not needed anymore I guess)
