Not a bad idea, and I'm surprised I hadn't thought of it since my sister and I were home schooled for about five years*. What if, for whatever reason, home-schooling isn't an option?sjfcontrol wrote:Home Schooling!Dave2 wrote:Just for my own edification, if I ever have kids and they're in a school that's "locked-down" because officials believe someone is on their way to the school to start killing people, what's the best way to get my hypothetical children out?

There were two downsides for me, neither of which are unavoidable...
The first is that I lagged in "social skills" compared to the other kids in my church's youth group, though this might just be because I'm introverted and stink at small talk (still do).
The second is that, because the only real schedule that we stuck to was "get at least a semester's worth of work done in a semester's worth of time" and I was often able to do a lot of the work in long "marathon sessions" later in the year, I never really developed the discipline that comes from having daily and weekly homework assignments (and being ADD really, really, really doesn't help in this regard). To this day (I'm 33), I do better by throwing myself almost exclusively at one topic until I've got it than I do by breaking it up into 1-2 hour chunks and addressing several topics in a day.
#2 really bit me in college. If you're home-schooling your children, please take the advice of someone who's been there and done that and ensure they have the discipline to cope with a "normal" learning schedule. You don't have to enforce it all the time, just make sure they can handle it if they need to.
