That right there is why a certain percentage of body fat is my actual goal. Any weight goals that I'm trying to achieve are just there because weight is easier to measure, and I'm not gaining muscle mass fast enough for it to make a difference yet. Maybe in 50lbs I'll recalculate my target weight, but I'm not really into the whole body-building thing so don't expect it to change by more than a few pounds.The Annoyed Man wrote:The weight loss has been slow partly because I've been putting some muscle back on. Before my back blew up, I used to keep myself in pretty good condition, and I don't think I had realized how much muscle atrophy I had.

Dunno about veggies, but the best tomatoes and oranges I've ever had come out of my parents' garden.UpTheIrons wrote:As for eating a salad with less dressing, I think the fresh veggies from the garden will probably help. Home-grown veg always seems to taste better than the shipped-in stuff from H.E.B. To me, anyways.
Try making a grilled chicken salad and use balsamic vinegar as the dressing (with a bit of extra virgin olive oil if you really want the body). You won't use a 1/2 cup of it, and nothing particularly horrible would happen if you did.pbwalker wrote:Luckily, we're moving out of the city and getting a new place up off of Smithson Valley Rd and 1863. 1 acre lot, and I've got the hankering to tackle gardening...so being able to go out and pick a fresh salad will be pretty cool. Now if I can just eat it without the 1/2 cup of dressing. haha!
Regular pasta and most breads are just below candy on the list of things to avoid -- too many simple carbs. Whole Wheat* pastas and breads are fine, though, because their complex carbs take more time to turn into sugar so they never give you that sugar spike. I've never had my mom's fantastically awesome pasta salad made with whole wheat pasta, but I just called her and she thinks it'd work well. Lemmie know if you want the recipe. (should we start a Tasty Healthy Food recipe thread?)
*"Whole Wheat" has become a marketing buzzword. Look at the ingredients... if it has "enriched" anywhere on the list, it's not what you're looking for put it back on the shelf.

(I've already lost fifty pounds and I still can't believe I ever let myself weigh this much)

I might have to modify my final goal, though. All those height/weight charts say that at 6'3", I should top out at 215 (or a bit less), but none of them seem to account for gender (men are usually bigger than women), general build (I've been told I'd look like a football player if I was in shape), or muscle mass vs fat mass (muscle weighs more than fat). I think I'll figure out what a healthy % body fat is, and shoot for that.
(very bad puns always intended)
Method(s):
I've got a two-stage strategy. For now I'm sticking to:
1) Playing Wii Fit. Some of the exercises really are fun, but the ones that seem to burn the most calories are usually just annoying. This "game" would be WAY better if I could figure out how to compete with people over the internet. I've got friends with it also trying to lose weight, and my parents would probably get one too if we could challenge each other in-game.
2) Eating reasonable amounts of healthy food. This one is hard for me. I usually eat fast, so by the time my brain gets the message from my stomach about being full, I'm stuffed. And I love fast food. And my general cooking technique is, "First, start with too much cheese. It really doesn't matter what you do next as long as it doesn't involve ice cream or fish." So, yeah, this whole "eating healthy" thing is a whole new paradigm for me.
When I lose enough weight for my elbows stop hurting when I do pushups, I'll add:
3) Pushups (according to http://hundredpushups.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;). I've started this a few times in 2010, but my elbows would start hurting after I'd get a week or so into it. They've hurt less each time I try to start the program, though, so I'm hoping that they won't start hurting at all when I get to some magical mass magnitude (sorry, I occasionally have a fleeting fondness for alliteration. I blame Alton Brown).
