IMO, leaving a gun in the car is a better option than leaving the house unarmed.

The mistake would be to visibly store anything in the car, or move it to the trunk, while in the parking lot where you can be observed. I generally safely store the gun before I arrive, usually when I am about a block away.

Never call a business. Just as likely to get them considering whether they want guns or not, whereas before most businesses haven't even considered the issue.
