Re: Houston/Galveston Group Powder Buy-Ordered

I'd like to say thanks and offer a big round of applause to Lonest4r for successfully honchoing the group buy. It is an often thankless and frustrating task. Enjoyed meeting you today and a job well done.

Re: Houston/Galveston Group Powder Buy-Ordered

I am quite grateful that you took on a thankless task. I am also quite patient and not blaming you for the fact the market is nuts.

Just about the time we completely give up on this is probably about the time it will ship.

Once you get it, if there is a couple bucks difference in shipping or Hazmat, let me know. I am quite happy to forward along. I have no desire for you to eat any costs - running the group buy is thankless enough.

I've got 4k of small pistol primers on my shelf, unopened, that I'm not likely to use any time soon. What if you buy those from me, and pull the equivalent off of the group buy to shake loose the delivery?
The original order had $62 shipping cost for $647 in product.

Then $151 in powder was removed, so now we have only $496 in product.

If you now remove $154 in primers, we have only $341 in product.

The point of a group buy is to minimize shipping costs (with Hazmat) as a percent of total cost. The shipping cost will certainly go down slightly with the reduced weight, but removing additional product from the group buy is going to definitely reduce the utility of doing this as a group buy at all.

Right now, my purchases represent over 50% of the group buy total. I am quite willing to wait for the primers.

Re: Houston/Galveston Group Powder Buy-Ordered

That is why I said on the first page, that I fully expect any group buy to take about a year. If it is any sooner than that, I will be happy to become pleasantly surprised.

Re: Houston/Galveston Group Powder Buy-Ordered

I still have plenty of powder and primers, so I am quite patient.

I am thinking that anything less than 12 months is a win. :thumbs2:

I ordered 10,000 Winchester primers from Cabelas in March, 2009 and they were shipped May 2010.

Re: Houston/Galveston Group Powder Buy?

mrvmax wrote:I can tell you that Powder valley is out of anything worthwhile. I have a wholesale account with them, Graf, Natchez and nobody had much of anything. I ended up getting what I could from Natchez (the wholesale side is Chattanooga Shooting Supply). Luckily I got what I needed to load 300 blackout and 45ACP. Right now when I looked all of them are out of everything I ordered.
Hence my observation that I fully expect any group buy will wait on backorder for about a year.

Re: Houston/Galveston Group Powder Buy?

Lonest4r wrote: I have never done this type of order before; what is the usual procedure?

Edit-Looks like this will be a tough event to manage with most vendors out of stock on many powders.
If you have never honchoed a group buy, then you are in for a treat. It can be a royal pain in the neck.

By far and away the most popular place for internet primer/powder sales is Powder Valley Inc. Even MidwayUSA accepts orders on the MidwayUSA website for powder, but it is drop shipped from Powder Valley Inc, who services the MidwayUSA account. That would be my recommendation.

Last big group buy I was in was right after the 2008 election. We ended up buying roughly 150,000 primers and about 120 lbs of powder if I recall correctly.

Here is how it is done.
  • Basically, you list a date that you are going to "close" the order and place it.
  • Everyone who wants something posts in the thread what their order is and they send the money to you.
  • You keep a running count posted here listing everyone's order and payment status.
  • On the "order Date", you order for everyone who got the money to you by that time.
  • You won't know what the shipping/Hazmat fees are until you order. Everyone will need to reimburse you for those fees after you place the order.
  • You place the order. The stuff will be backordered. In 2008, it took almost a year to fill the order.
  • Once the order is in, you coordinate some way for people to pick up their stuff. It can get subdivided by area of the city. For example, you'd give all the stuff for Northwest Houston to "Bob", who would meet people in this end of town, give other stuff for Sugarland to "Joe" who would meet people there, someone else would cover Gavleston, etc.
With all that said, I might as well jump on board. I only order Ramshot online since I've never seen it in stores. Here is what I'll take.

RamZIP-04 * Ramshot ZIP - 4 LB. $65.60
RamSIL-04 * Ramshot SILHOUETTE - 4 LB. $65.60
WINWSP * WIN SMALL PISTOL PRIMERS (1000) @ $26.00 x (5), Total 5000 for $130.00
