Mr. Cotton was right on with his first post in this thread. And thanks ELB for the post as well.

I think "giving it up" is sending the wrong messages to society as a whole. Why should a person have to "give it up" to a criminal? Not to preach but a stand has to be taken and this type of mentality and needs to be corrected through education. It does nothing but put the good guys (that is us) at more risk. I see what led police depts, etc. to teach this but that line of thinking didnt not work. It only empowered the criminal element.

Now I am not saying that there might not be a circumstance where not letting someone take your wallet/money/car/whatever is the way out of danger. The situation and numerous other factors will have to determine the course of action one has to take. Everyone is different and every situation is different. But for me being told we need to "give it up" is NOT the main option we need to live by. That is insulting.

Funny fact, I was watching NYPD BLUE last week and there was an episode where Det. John Kelly was speaking at some neighborhood crime watch meeting. That is exactly what he said. I dont remember the exact phrasing but he said "In a crime, robbery, etc. what do you do? Give it up. Let them take it." Yea, I KNOW its only TV but I spit my soda out I was drinking! That is how much it disturbs be me to hear that nonsense! Well I guess its kinda true.......it is NY after all and we know how gun friendly that place is! ;) (and No offense meant to amyone from NY!)
