I think you've got it!! I only scored a 77% on the practice tests before I took my exam (and passed it).

Re: Alternate Comms
Agreed. And add to that the impossibility of locating and confiscating countless receivers... many of which only cost $25-40.Charles L. Cotton wrote: ↑Wed Jan 13, 2021 5:48 pmShutting down ham radio would not be easy at all. Hundreds of thousands of transceivers exist and they don't have to operate at fixed locations. If we ever get to that stage, the entire country would be at war anyway.

Re: Alternate Comms
Just FYI, handheld's with low wattage UHF and intermittent transmissions are more difficult to locate/intercept (i.e. FRS radios). You won't be talking to a lot of people with those.chamberc wrote: ↑Wed Jan 13, 2021 9:33 amThey can track down any stationary HAM user any time they want pretty easily... fox and hound exercises show it doesn't take much. Truthfully, even the Soviet Union had ham operators. Its how the Soviet's got contact with the outside world.

I do have a couple handheld Baofeng's, but haven't really tried using them. With the attack on free speech that is underway I think I need to get serious about this.Paladin wrote: ↑Mon Jan 11, 2021 11:08 pm Facebook has announced that it will remove all content that mentions “Stop the Steal,”
Like a lot of folks on the forum, I've got a HAM radio license as well. We're definitely gonna need alternate comms.
What is a good "beginner" HAM radio set-up? I'm looking for something that balances cost and effectiveness.
Thanks in advance.
With your Baofeng's and a $5 programming cable and CHIRP (Free) you can do a ton.
Out of the box you can use the Baofeng as a poor man's scanner:
It scans VHF and UHF separately. To scan all frequencies within the VHF (130-180MHz) or UHF(400-521Mhz) bands:
Turn on the radio
Press the red [VFO/MR] button to toggle to VFO mode
Hold down the [*SCAN] button until scanning begins. frequencies will quickly switch on the display
The radio will briefly pause on a frequency with activity
Press the [*SCAN] button to stop on the current frequency and end scanning
You can use Repeaters to boost your reachTo activate FM Receiver:
Turn on the radio
Press red [VFO/MR] button to toggle to VFO mode
Press red [CALL] button on the side of the radio
Press [BAND] button to toggle between 65-75 MHz or 76-108MHz.
Type desired frequency into keypad
When finished press the red [CALL] button to return to VFO mode

AR15.com Backup Site Live, Switching to First Amendment Friendly Site Registrar
On Monday, January 11, 2021, I received notice from our site registrar that AR15.com had violated their terms of service and that AR15.com would be shut down immediately. The registrar’s decision to de-platform AR15.com was final and no method to appeal was offered.
It remains unclear specifically what content allegedly violated the registrar’s terms of service.
However, I am happy to report that we have found a new, First Amendment-friendly site registrar and we have begun the process of transitioning AR15.com to the new registrar.
We expect the switchover to take up to 5 days. During that time, our famous “AR15.com” URL will not be usable. Once the switchover is complete, AR15.com will be fully restored to normal function.
In the meantime, I welcome freedom lovers and firearm enthusiasts to visit us at our temporary URL: www.ar15-backup.com. We will post on the backup site when the normal AR15.com has been completely restored.
