"Woman killed by police after chase/League City, HPD officers shoot robbery suspect
By ROSANNA RUIZ - Staff
An unidentified woman accused of stealing beer from a League City convenience store was fatally shot by police when she pointed her gun at officers, police said.
The woman and another unidentified woman were suspected of robbing a store in the 1800 block of West FM 646, said Lt. James Spencer, of the League City Police Department.
A League City patrol officer spotted the suspects' dark-colored Dodge pickup on Texas 3 and Main Street. The officer attempted to stop the truck as it was westbound on Main, but the woman sped off, Spencer said.
The suspects led League City and Houston officers on a chase that whipped through Webster and into Houston. In Webster, the truck stopped off in a wooded area where police believe the female passenger was dropped off. Police have to review videotape from the convenience store for a description of the woman , Spencer said.
The pickup driver ultimately stopped at an apartment complex in the 600 block of Barringer Lane, where she fled on foot. She ended up in a foyer at the complex, where she stood in front of Yvette Gonzalez's apartment door.
Gonzalez heard the commotion and peered out her window and saw a batch of officers. She then heard the sound of her doorknob rattling.
"She was trying to get in," Gonzalez said. "I looked out the peep hole and saw her (holding) a gun to her head."
Gonzalez grabbed her infant son and fell to the floor.
The officers were "yelling, `Put the gun down! We'll talk to you! Put the gun down,' " Spencer said.
The gun was shot out of the woman 's hand, but she picked it back up and then pointed it at the officers, he said. Houston police Officer K.W. Rogers and League City police Sgt. P.R. Odin, shot the woman several times, Spencer said.
The woman was taken to Ben Taub General Hospital, where she died.
An autopsy is pending.
Rogers was placed on administrative duty, typical after shootings, while Odin is on paid administrative leave."
