Why go?

In my son's experience, those things were certainly true. Not so true for a westerner though, as for the Chinese, since he could afford to eat in western style restaurants, and there are many high-end places in a city like Beijing. Outside a city like Beijing it is a much bigger problem.

I respectfully beg to differ, but living in China would be a frustrating nightmare if you had to live there as a proletariat Chinese national. I guarantee you that your son was very well shielded from the horrors.
Have you been there? They do try to block websites, but it doesn't work too well. I doubt he tried all on the list, but he definitely used some of them. He also speaks Japanese and he spent a lot of time on Japanese sites. I sent him youtube links he viewed with no problem. I sent him links to anti-Chinese articles and he viewed them with no problem. I wouldn't have a Facebook account myself, but he does, and he accessed in China. IMDB, yep, he's a big movie buff. The sites I see that wrere probably blocked are the Tibet Post and Falun Dafa. He knew the authorities were sensitive about Tibet so he stayed away from it.

You can't understand China by reading about it in the Western media. What looks horrible on paper is not so horrible in reality --at least for those in the developing middle class. It's too complicated to describe in a short post, so I'll give an example. You go to a park in Beijing and there are signs at the entrance banning just about every possible activity you can think of other than walking through it or sitting on a bench. No sleeping, no eating, no kite flying, no running, no dancing, no music, etc. However, no one obeys any of these rules. Right at the entrance there might be a dance class playing music on a boombox, further inside, people picnicking, people sleeping on park benches, flying kites, etc. This was one of the contrasts with South Korea, where nearly everyone was careful to obey all the rules --in China, people ignore the laws and the rules, and they are not enforced, except in those areas that are particularly sensitive to the regime, like protesting about Tibet.

Secretary of State Hillary (I did not know about Benghazi) Clinton on Thursday will celebrate the launch of a newly rebranded organization called the “100,000 Strong Foundation,” which aims to have 100,000 American students studying in China by 2014.

Thursday's event will "underscore the importance of study abroad in China and the benefits to our strategic relationship with China as well as the personal benefits individuals receive through these exciting experiences," the news release said.

Hey, my son studied in China, and I can assure you, he's no commie. Not that I support anything coming from the Criminal in Chief, who no doubt has ulterior motives for this proposal, but it seems like we'd want to have lots of people who can read and write Chinese. And really, today's China isn't all that much different from Obama's America, excepting perhaps it's maybe a little more free.
one thing you can be sure of they will have better math skills.
They may or may not. My son saw no evidence that the Chinese people are better educated. And the supposedly educated are superstitious and woefully ignorant about many things --especially about the world outside of China. But by simple math, we can be pretty sure that since China has about four times more people than we do, they also have about four times more smart people than we do, and with similar numbers in India, between them, they have about eight times more smart people that we do, which means we need to be very careful about immigration if we don't want to be working for them in the future.

Right. Try having baby girls or go to a real Catholic Mass and see how free you are.

I'm not drawing an equivalence --it's way too complicated for that. I don't know anything about Catholic Mass there, but the baby girl stuff is exaggerated. My son met people who have multiple children, including baby girls. Their punishment? After the first child, the State refuses to pay for things like schooling, and they have to pay a tax. Yes, it's not fair, but people who are wealthy enough can essentially have all the children they want. Of course, they can't own guns there. Othersie, there was nothing my son wanted to do in China that he couldn't do. But yeah, he wasn't criticizing the regime either. He didn't even encounter any internet restrictions. Ironically, he met many people who seemed to have values very similar to the values of 1950's America. He also spent some time in South Korea, and found that he faced more restrictions there than he did in China. China doesn't have a TSA at airports. My son got more hassle coming home to his own country than he did entering China. China doesn't have Obamacare either. People have to pay for their own medical treatment.

I'm not trying to convince anyone that China is more free or better than the US: it's not. However, we do seem to be on crossing trajectories, with China headed towards greater freedom and the US headed for less.
