I wouldn't consider any public parking lot, and especially a garage, to be a safe location. And the advice I believe in when it comes to an abduction from a public place, is take the bullet there where there is a chance of being noticed and getting help, rather than get in the car, because when you arrive at the assailant's intended destination you won't be leaving alive and there won't be anyone around to help you.
When I took a women's defense course (non-gun) they said to always fight fight fight and never stop fighting. If you die, well there is nothing you can do about it but never ever give up. Never ever go with anyone you don't want to (abduction) and even when you think fighting means certain death not fighting means a worse death. As bad as it would be to be shot and die that way, it would be far worse to be raped repeatedly, beaten, tortured, then strangled to death. Perhaps it is a bit of a vain hope, but human predators (like animal predators) usually don't want to get hurt in the process of gaining their prey (or so I was told by the LEO doing the class) so even if you can't kill with your bare hands injure just as badly as you can and go for weak spots (eyes, nose, ears, shins, toes, groin [of course--but it is the first thing protected by an attacker so other places may be more available]).

Years ago I was home sick and had on (yikes) daytime TV....it was some talk show...maybe even Oprah, and an L.A. detective (I think it was L,A,) was telling women how to react to certain situations and said NEVER allow yourself to be abducted, because as you say, death may merely be the end of your ordeal and it will be somewhere that no one is around to help you. Whether they're unarmed, or armed with a bat, knife, or gun....scream, yell (I think he suggested yelling FIRE), resist, then and there, and he will probably flee, but if he beats, stabs, or shoots you, you'll have a good chance of getting help and surviving. I agree with that detective. Of course, if you're in a parking garage by yourself, especially at night, there may also not be anyone around to help you, but he can't be sure of that, and you'd still be better off yelling and fighting and taking your chances at the scene.

I work in what I felt was a safe location. A man hid between the cars on the top level of the garage and just waited. He quickly approached her with a gun and demanded her purse. I am making an assumption, but I assume after he saw her, he decided to take her and her car with him.

He headed downtown and she got brave and bailed from the car. Probably saving her life.

She is obviously pretty shook up.

Stay safe.
