You're a clerk at a convenience store that has probably prohibited you from having and using a weapon in your own defense, you're making minimum wage, and you're going to put your life at risk and potentially have to defend yourself by shooting someone --all to stop a bunch of people from stealing beer and donuts? You're going to put you life at risk, and risk going to jail, to defend a couple hundred dollars of property that the owners don't care enough about to defend themselves? That's crazy.

The people responsible for protecting the store's property are the people who own the store. They apparently don't even care enough about the clerk's life to spend any of their own money on security. They have obviously made the decision that it's cheaper to let people rob the place than it is to provide enough security to deter or prevent it. And that is essentially why these flash mob robberies continue: it's cheaper to let them happen than to prevent them. That means they're being written off as a cost of doing business and are not likely to stop.
