Re: Opinions on Ruger SR 1911 .45 ACP

Aggie_engr wrote:My brother recently purchased a new Ruger SR1911 full size. After a good cleaning we took it out to the farm for a trial run. We both have a couple years experience in IDPA and 3-gun and the gun shot maybe 3 rounds before it started malfunctioning. During fire the slide wouldn't fully close into battery. This occurred with the factory mag and Wilson mags using winchester white box 230gr ball and federal 230gr ball. We thought maybe it just needed breaking in but it just got worse the more we shot it. Eventually it turned into a single shot handgun to the point the slide would seize and the first round wouldn't even load. It felt like there was a crude, metal on metal resistance between the slide to frame fit and it took massive force to make the slide cycle.

Needless to say it got shipped back to Ruger, who ended up replacing the "barrel and slide assembly" according to my bro's words and since then it has eaten a couple hundred rounds of various ammo flawlessly. I liked the trigger and quality/fit/feel of the gun and it shot very accurately. Hope to see more good results in future IDPA matches.
Your story sounds like the problem was galling. It's pretty common when two tightly fitted pieces of stainless steel rub together. If there is insufficient lubrication, metal builds up between the parts and they can actually seize and effectively weld themselves together.

There's no need to depress the slide lock. The notch in the slide is designed so that pulling the slide back will cam the slide lock down. :tiphat:

This is why a picture, or at least a better description than "won't load" would be helpful.

So the slide comes forward and just stops when it hits the back of the top round? If that's the case, then I suspect someone installed the wrong recoil spring. Either that or it's completely missing.

Good point! Standard for a 5" .45 is a 16 pound spring. (18 for a commander).

Running Arrow Bill wrote:Got the Ruger SR 1911. :)

Small problem... It WON'T chamber a round even though it cocks ok. Ammo is correct. Same issue with both Ruger magazines that came with it.

It's depressing... :(

Any ideas on what the problem is or MY problem???
Thanks,

Bill
Have you field stripped the pistol and lubricated it?

I'm assuming it strips the top round from the mag and then hangs up before the round goes into the chamber. Will it finish chambering if you bump the back of the slide?

One other thing... make sure you're not "riding the slide" down. "Slingshot" the slide closed.

Re: Opinions on Ruger SR 1911 .45 ACP

By all the reports I know of, they are fine pistols.

One of my coworker has had one for a while and loves it. After shooting his, another coworker just bought one.

I've seen some reports of the front sight breaking off, but it doesn't appear to be widespread. If I was in the market for a seventh 1911, I would buy one, probably the commander.
