I know that was the reason given, but there's no doubt that eliminating them saved money for the auto makers.WildBill wrote:Pawpaw wrote:I still miss the old vent windows.I think this was due to looks over function.

Re: Anyone interested in a "Your first car" thread?
Vaccuum operated windshield wipers stayed around for a long time. I had a 62 Falcon that used them. Yes, they worked fairly well, unless you were accelerating or going up hill.Vol Texan wrote:It had vacuum-pump windshield wipers. If it was raining, I'd have to take the foot off the gas so they could work, and then memorize the road for a few seconds, and then start accelerating again.

Most cars had that until they started cheaping out and made you push the vent window open by hand. I still miss the old vent windows.Vol Texan wrote:On the inside of the door, there were two window cranks. One rolled the main door window up and down, and the other one rotated the smaller vent window open and closed.

Norton Commando's were the perfect motorcycle, for anyone who loves working on motorcycles.WildBill wrote:I had a friend who owned a Norton Commando. He couldn't keep it running long enough to worry about the lights.

I had no problem keeping mine running, but it seemed I was always fixing or adjusting something on it. When I wasn't doing that, I was cleaning up oil spots.

Re: Anyone interested in a "Your first car" thread?
In the motorcycle world, or at least where Nortons were concerned, Lucas was known as the company that invented darkness. You couldn't keep the lights working on those old double-thumpers.WildBill wrote:You're welcome. I am sure they were Lucas running lights. I don't think the Brits used anything else on their cars.Oldgringo wrote:YES! Except that mine had big Lucas (?) running lights on the bumper. Flip that switch and oncoming cars most definitely dimmed their lights. Thank you!

My first was a '55 Chevy 4 door with a 235 6-cyl and three on the tree.RPBrown wrote:1955 Chevy 2 door post with a 265 CI engine and three on the tree.
My second car is the one I really miss. '65 Mustang 2+2 with a Hi-Performance 289 and 4-speed. 271 horsepower pushing a 2600 lb car could really scoot! It's a wonder I didn't kill myself.
