I agree that it's time for some "common sense" measures to prevent dangerous weapons getting into the hands of criminals. The best way to do this is:

Take the CRIMINAL off the street. It's darn near impossible to get your hands on a "military style assault weapon" or even a handgun in prison! Stop our wholesale early release programs, undo the "reforms" that William Wayne Justice imposed on our prison systems so that prisoners put in an honest day's work for their three hots and a cot, and the prison system can be cost neutral again. Recidivism in our prison systems is the problem! Will my "radical" idea stop all crimes and mass shootings? NO, but I absolutely guarantee that violent crime rates would plummet. Study after study has shown that violent crimes are overwhelmingly committed by people who have been convicted by other crimes in the past. This needs to be tried, since the president is interested in anything "even if it saves only one life".
