Sounds like he came toward her in an aggressive aggressive manner.(She was standing in front of the door as he exited, challenging her with profanity.) If she couldn't clearly see his hands and he was as close as it seems he must have been, then by my reckoning, it was a completely justified response.
Sounds to me that he got his question answered. One shouldn't be using profanity in addressing anyone. Someone wants to be angry at the world, expect a response in return. An armed society is a polite society.
