In either model you'll need different chokes for skeet and duck/goose gun. Either different barrels or a barrel with changeable chokes will work.

I prefer the 1100. I have 3, a 20ga mod choke, 20ga LW Imp Cyl, and a 12ga mod. I've never owned a 870 but have shot a few. For dove and quail hunting I just prefer the SA over the pump and I really like the light weight 20 when I do a lot of walking. For shooting clays it doesn't matter so much I spoze, just depends on what you get used to and like.
With my 1100's I just make sure I keep them reasonably clean and change the gas O ring when needed and they never let me down.
