I can't speak for the OP of course, but my take on his "free range" comment is that it was not a high fenced ranch. There are many ranches which have been fenced with deer proof fences to keep the deer inside. Often, genetically superior deer are imported to increase deer and antler size. Additionally, they are fed high nutrition diets to increase antler growth. So to me, he's indicating that the deer was taken on low fenced range...not necessary an area open to public hunting though. These places are available for lease and as my dear ol dad used to say, "All it costs is money".
