Re: Government shutdown
I have to say that's not entirely true. As a young enlisted man in Korea, room and board furnished, sure, no problem not being paid. But as a Staff Sargent when I returned, I had a wife, a child, a Mobile home payment, a car payment, insurance, furnished my own food for myself and family, etc. If I didn't get paid, I'd be in one heck of a pickle. Same when I joined the officer ranks and then had two kids. So, it's not accurate to say one can't compare that with the 800,000 not being paid now.Suri wrote: ↑Tue Jan 22, 2019 6:47 pmThanks for you service. I did some service too and got along ok without money sometimes (as a teenager I was not very frugal) but food and lodging were not a problem. So you can't compare your situation with all of the 800,000 that are going unpaid. We should all care; there might be some nice governmental employees...rotor wrote: ↑Tue Jan 22, 2019 6:00 pmI was in the military during one of these shutdowns and didn't get paid, all about abortion at that time. You suck up and keep working. I don't feel very sorry about any federal employee not getting paid until this is over. They WILL get paid. Good time for them to sit down, write a letter to their congresspeople and tell them to work with Trump. Or they can wait forever to get paid. I personally don't care. Especially for people in the IRS. Have you ever dealt with an IRS employee?Suri wrote: ↑Tue Jan 22, 2019 5:44 pmWe're talking about the FBI being impaired. Let's do an audit instead of just hampering it to see what might happen.

anygunanywhere wrote: ↑Mon Jan 21, 2019 8:52 amThis is wise and true. If you really think about it, no matter where you are, no matter what you are doing, you are bombarded with "news" or opinions. It is not difficult to know what the enemy's talking points are.
I especially like Sean Hannity's vids showing one commentator after another using the exact same wording/word as the previous one. It's all "talking Points" fed to them by the DNC, and they use it non-stop.

Re: Government shutdown
I'm an old retiree too (about to turn 77). Are you saying you need to need to watch the pundits to know what they think. Here's what CNN and MSNBC think. Trump is a lying, White Supremist, biggoted, traitor who must be removed from office by any means necessary. Thats all they have to say 24/7. FOX, with the exception of Shepard Smith, usually gives Trump a pass, except when he is actually wrong. Shepard despises the man and is the only liberal anchor on Foxnews. Where do you get your unbiased news in this country? I say nowhere. Frankly, I find absolutely no humor in cable or network news. Making my blood pressure rise is not healthy. I do feel that at least Fox news presents both sides of commentary, whereas all the others on TV are one way only. MHO.Suri wrote: ↑Sun Jan 20, 2019 11:10 pmSorry to belabor this but I think our reference points are different. When I say "news" I'm not referring to the commentators that promote their biased agendas - and we have a lot of those. But I do watch even the various pundits occasionally just to get a handle on what the extremes are saying - if they can speak intelligently and give meaningful arguments with legitimate data sources, I'm curious. And I even find humor in some of those. By the way I find BBC World News interesting sometimes and enjoy the PMQ Sessions. Maybe as an old retiree I have too much time on my hands and watch tv too much.G26ster wrote: ↑Sun Jan 20, 2019 9:16 pmThat's what's wrong with "news" today. The SLANT! There are very few straight news programs anymore. All networks are biased one way or the other, mainly and almost exclusively left. I don't want to hear the opinions. I don't need my news interpreted. I'm not a dummy. There's nothing I dislike more than a thirty-something political science major, with little to no real life experience render their "expert" opinion. Journalism in this country is on deaths door. Reporting just the facts no longer exists.
Stay cool... be curious.

After Belushi died, and all of the originals left SNL has not been the same. It originally was all about the comedy, now it is all about progressive leftist communist garbage. They have no humor that could ever interest me.

Re: Government shutdown
Yes, and the critical praise comes from the like minded socialist, progressive media. I agree that it "used to be about comedy," but now it's all about bashing Trump and conservatives. Just because it's satire, doesn't make it less than garbage. Sorry, but bashing my values, calling me a bigot, a deplorable, or other name or implied label doesn't make it funny to me, satire or not.

Re: Government shutdown
The only pilot certificates with an expiration date are Instructor certificates. Other than that, your license(s) have no expiration date. "Currency" expires, but there are no new certificates required when getting current again.G.A. Heath wrote: ↑Mon Jan 07, 2019 5:25 pm Here's my take on this...
Essential: Needed to protect life, liberty, and property
Non-essential: Needed to operate government functions not related to the protection of Life, liberty, and property)
Unneeded: People whose jobs do not have a significant work load when they get back.
An example of an essential job would be Air traffic controllers, an example of an non-essential job would be the FAA administrators responsible for licensing, while an example of an unneeded job would be the congressional barber shop staff.
Consider that pilots who need to renew their certifications can test during the 'shutdown' because the testing centers are private parties but pilots will not receive a new or renewed certificate until after everyone goes back to work and gets caught up to where that pilot is in the system. New Amateur radio licensees will not get their call signs until after the shutdown ends. The thing that annoys me about the shutdown is that once people come back and get their checks issued to them for the 'time off' during the shutdown we will have to pay them overtime to get caught back up.

WhoWouldGuess wrote: ↑Sun Jan 06, 2019 3:32 pm Anygunanywhere, the House approved a bill, it went to the Senate, who approved it and sent it to the President, who refused to sign it. Whose fault is this?
The Senate passed a bill, and later in the month the House passed it's own bill much different than the Senate's. The two bills were never reconcilled by committee, and no bill made it to the President's desk.
Please folks, spare me the tears over the poor unpaid gov't workers. In no so called shutdown has any gov't worker permanently lost any money. They will be paid. I don't recall during my lean years of layoffs, or furloughs, the gov't or anyone else shedding a tear for me.
The President said he was willing to compromise on the 5.6 billion, and the Dems said you get nothing. That's not compromise.

Re: Government shutdown
Why is it called a government shutdown, when the government isn't shut down? Could you imagine a headline that said, "GM Shutdown. Only 80% of the employees are working." The first question would be, "Huh?"
