Andy, I'm not comparing it to AA, nor am I a weapons expert. But, it only takes one well aimed or lucky shot with a .50 or .51 cal. Helicopters fly low and slow, in addition to the ability to hover in place. With the number of critical exposed components on your average helicopter, in addition to those few components with interior armor, damage from a .50 to almost anyone of those is enough to cause a crash, or at the least a forced or precautionary landing. Also, the greater range on the .50 is a plus for the bad guys.
