It seems like somewhat of a catch 22 anyway. If the gun was dirty, and then you clean it, only to have to shoot it to verify operation, then it's dirty again. As a retired aviator, the aircraft I flew were post-flighted after the last flight, had a daily inspection done by maintenance prior to flight the next day, then pre-flighted by me. Equipment always worked, until it decided not to. All machinery will have issues at some point, regardless of how many times it's checked.
