Sorry for the abbreviation, but yes. In my day (I'm 68) the Army had no Aviation Branch. I was an enlisted Infantry (11C heavy weapons) for 5 years, and a commissioned infantry/aviator after that. The Army was always deathly afraid of losing their close air support assets, like when the Army Air Corps broke away to become the Air Force. That all changed in the late eighties.
