Honestly, I don't recommend the Shield in .40 unless you REALLY want .40 (i.e., that's the caliber for all your other pistols). The 9mm packs an amazing punch, and when paired up with Hornady Critical Defense +P, you have a gun that is easily on par with a .40.

The thumb safety on the Shield, like the Ruger LC9, really isn't meant to be used. It's more like a "cosmetic" feature. Many customers won't buy pistols that lack safeties (like Glocks), so the unobtrusive thumb safety makes people feel comfortable.

I've shot every "Pocket 9" out there except the Beretta Nano (which deserves to never be touched for reasons of sheer ugliness). I think the Shield in 9mm is the best-shooting (and most-accurate) pocket 9 on the market.

P.S. - If you find one at $499, that's an excellent bargain right now.
