An insurance requirement might actually backfire on the anti-gunners, since the actuaries would discover that guns owned by law-abiding citizens are very rarely used in actual injury shootings, and the premium would be so small as to almost not warrant the effort. And criminals would not bother to get the insurance anyway. And the know-nothing reporters would never ask "Did the (criminal) shooter have the mandatory insurance?"

Contrast my vehicle's liability insurance portion, which is only about $120 a year for $250,000 bodily injury, and this is covering me and my 3000 lb machine (the truck) in which I hurtle down freeways every day while juggling coffee cup, cellphone, steering wheel, notepad, and stickshift, dicing with big rigs, grannies going a careful 45 mph, casual lane-changers, not to mention my fellow cellphone chatterers.
