You are being prepared, not paranoid. Like some have said, i just dont answer the door. If i am expecting someone, i will have received a call earlier to let me know. Otherwise, you can knock but i wont answer. My dad gave me a hard time once when a lady knocked and i didnt open it. He said, it just a lady probably asking for directions.
