No offense taken Trog. When I read back through my post I saw that I could have done better.
My wife & I are both middle school teachers, we have children in the middle and elem. schools. I would feel better knowing that they were protected at school and on field trips by armed teachers. I just want more training and testing than you get with a chl.

Re: Harrold school district to staff: Pack your pistols
If I can carry everywhere else, day in and day out and not have a ND or gun scare or shoot up the mall or my congregation, then why don't I have the mental and physical capibilities to carry the same way at school?[/quote]
I wasn't clear in my previous post, I DO want you to be able to carry at school. I would rather identify a situation in which an accident could happen and plan ways to avoid it than deal with the accident itself.
I'm definitely not trying to single out teachers, http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/co ... v=hcmodule
I know coaches who change clothes at least twice during the school day, not always in a locker-room. Frequently other employees change into something more or less casual to match what they are doing at that time of the day. Certainly possible for somebody who purse carries to move a weapon from one purse to another.
I believe the majority of chl holders are quite capable of carrying at school safely. On the other hand, there are a lot of stories about unsafe gun handling during classes/qualifications. It isn't stupidity or apathy, some people simply don't have knowledge or experience in weapon handling. Therefore I also believe a little extra training and certification to help insure firearm proficiency would reduce the chance of somebody making a stupid mistake that sets legal carry back instead of allowing it to move forward. 2-3 days of firearm training (carry methods, safe handling, weapon retention, scenarios, live-fire drills) would be pretty welcome compared to some of the other crap I've sat through.

Re: Harrold school district to staff: Pack your pistols
I'm ok with everyone with a CHL being allowed to carry on campus. I see parents and other members of the community entering the school's campus armed exactly as I go to the bank or grocery store. But when you are a school employee you are part of a team responsible for the lives of a lot of other people's children. Also I feel a ND is more likely to happen where you feel comfortable and become complacent. Accidents occur when guns get moved from one place to another, get checked to see if they are loaded, or just grossly mishandled. We've heard, "then the gun just went off" way too many times already.

Re: Harrold school district to staff: Pack your pistols
True. I don't have a problem with chl-legal carry on campus, but I would like to see additional training for district employees who will be carrying. I am about to start my 15th year in a classroom. I've known teachers I would walk right along side into ANY situation, and I have known very good teachers who I don't think should have a driving license. Being a talented teacher and a safe bus driver don't automatically go together, much less firearm proficiency. We all know that the CHL qualification does not adaquately test this.boomerang wrote:It seems like the school district can decide what requirements must be met before they give permission. They don't have to allow every CHL to carry just because they allowed some.

Re: Harrold school district to staff: Pack your pistols
When they say "50 employees" that most likely means district-wide: teachers, administrators, teacher aides, cafeteria staff, custodians, bus drivers . . . and it's likely some of those responsibilities overlap.SCone wrote:I'm really interested in transferring to this district. According to the report, they have 50 employees & only 110 students. Must be tiny classrooms?
DSW grew up in that area and says she always knew they had a school, but didn't know where they got the students.

Re: Harrold school district to staff: Pack your pistols
I believe the training they mentioned is by crisis prevention institute http://www.crisisprevention.com/ . There are staff members trained in that on every campus afaik. I've been through it twice, mostly diffusing hostile or potentially hostile situations. There is some restraint training but how good it is depends on the instructor and group you're with. From my dealings with them I get the feeling they would be very much against teachers being armed.
I'm hoping this goes somewhere positive for all of us.
Enjoy!
