Re: NY: Suspected serial killer arrested

Upon further research, the New York Daily News seems closer to an accurate account:
Cops said a .22-caliber sawed off rifle found in his duffel bag at his girlfriend’s ... home was used in all the homicides.

The Ruger rifle with the sawed-off stock and a laser taped to it, plus a bloody kitchen knife, two Buck folding knives, black gloves and legless pantyhose, which might have served as a mask, ...
[The suspect] is derisively known to his neighbors as “Son of Sal” because he lives in an unfinished, unkempt home and often calls various city agencies to report his neighbors’ trash-can violations and building irregularities.

One neighbor relished the possibility [that he] had been arrested — but found it difficult to believe [that he] killed anyone.

“If he is convicted we’ll throw a block party,” the neighbor said. “He’s insane. But a serial killer? That’s a long stretch.”

I noticed that.

To be perfectly nerdy about it, there are "conversion" guns that can take a .22 barrel or some smaller-gauge shotgun barrel. It might have been one of those.

On the other hand, this is the Wall Street Journal. Although it is a conservative newspaper, the last time I checked, Wall Street was in lower Manhattan. I would not expect their reporters to possess a great command of firearms knowledge or terminology.

Re: NY: Suspected serial killer arrested

I don't know that there is any evidence that the suspect was a racist or anti-immigrant. New York is the proverbial melting pot on steroids. Probably a lot of shops are owned by immigrants, as they are just about everywhere in the U.S.

More likely the suspect targeted low-end stores where he could put his goods on consignment, which was his alleged ruse for getting his foot in the door. These stores often are run by one person, so there would be no witnesses.

NY: Suspected serial killer arrested

From July through last week three owners of convenience or dollar stores in New York City were fatally shot. All three were shot with the same .22 caliber weapon. All were Middle Eastern, Asian, or Persian.

Police worked up a profile and obtained surveillance video of a man who might be the killer.

Yesterday a 63-year-old white man from Staten Island turned himself in and eventually confessed to at least one of the shootings after friendly conversations with police.

The police obtained a search warrant and found a sawed-off rifle suspected to be the murder weapon.
