IMO, what you described is typical of younger kids on a thrill-seeking spree. They might hope to "hit the jackpot" in terms of finding a gun or some expensive electronics.
We had a wave a burglaries maybe 12 years ago. Our next-door neighbors had a large potted plant stolen from their front porch inside a locked fence. The cops caught the thief—an adult male that they knew as a chronic offender—carrying the plant a few blocks away.

I have to admit a similar thought crossed my mind. That just doesn't look like the kind of area where muggers hide in the bushes.
A determined robber would have taken the driver's wallet and cell phone, at least. Maybe the entire vehicle.

League City: Mugging on the road East Bay Area Blvd
In oh-so-safe League City, a teenage drive was reportedly robbed in the 5300 block of Carefree Drive near East Bay Area Boulevard about midnight Thursday. The alleged robber jumped in the back seat and threatened the driver. He fled on foot with items of little value.
The robber is described as "Hispanic and of average height and build."
