Molon_labe wrote:The guy is paralyzed for the rest of his life and the doc gets 10 years probation and pays a fraction of what he earned in a year

So its ok now for someone to snap and just shoot someone crippling him for life?

I'll stop now and say Justice WAS NOT served
I've been thinking about this. We're accustomed to the idea of prison as punishment, but what purpose would it serve? The convicted man apparently made a series of bad descisions under stress, but he doesn't sound like a potential repeat offender.

He will be a felon and limited in what he can do for the rest of his life.
Molon_labe wrote:Well no the civil lawsuit will ensue
Why not? The only reason not to sue may be that the defendant has no assets.

Sentence: 10 years probation and a $10,000 fine.

http://news.galvestondailynews.com/stor ... 98b072ba57

We never know all the details of cases like this that are reported in the media. The jury deliberated for a long time, which could indicate that it was a complicated situation, or just that the jury members didn't agree.

It sounds like the man was involved in a couple of altercations and went looking for the other guy. Now his career is destroyed and his future prospects limited.

BTW, this man was widely labeled a terrorist by bloggers at the time of the incident. He was born in the U.S.

Jury returns a guilty verdict after two days of deliberation: http://news.galvestondailynews.com/stor ... 05912c64d0

Sentencing hearing today (Friday).

Coincidentally, I drove through the area where this incident occured, State Highway 3 and Deats Road in Dickinson. It is a poor, run-down neighborhood on the edge of town. I had not realized that parts of Dickinson were like that.

Case goes to the jury: http://news.galvestondailynews.com/stor ... 2c8a36dba4

I had not read before that the person who was shot became permanently disabled.
Days after the shooting, Fadhli told sheriff’s deputies the 9mm pistol was not his, but admitted this week he had brought the weapon as he sought the man who had attacked him twice at a convenience store that was near both the scene of the shooting and Fadhli’s home.

Molon_labe wrote:So some guy pops this doctor..the then goes and shoots some dude who he thinks is the guy who hit him....isn't that premeditated murder, not aggravated assault...
No one died.

The prosecutors go for the worst charge they can prove easily. Aggravated assault get result in a 20-year sentence, though most prisoners get out much earlier if they behave.

Update: Dr. Wameeth Fadhli, who allegedly shot a man in Dickinson 13 months ago, is on trail for aggravated assault.
Fadhli reportedly had been in a nearby convenience store minutes earlier when a man struck him in an unrelated altercation. Prosecutors Bill Reed and Paige Santell allege that Fadhli mistook Scott for his attacker.

Scott said he and a man in a Jeep struggled over a gun the motorist had brandished, before “numerous shots were fired, two of which hit and wounded Scott.

“I just fell, Scott said. “I thought I had just tripped.

Defense attorney Margaret Hindman asked Scott whether he was on drugs and whether Scott could have worked his own fingers near the gun’s trigger during the struggle.

Scott answered “no, to both questions.

I'm sorry to hear it's getting worse in Sugar Land. That seems to happen when a lot of people move into an area that was formerly isolated.

Galveston is actually getting better. Ten years ago there was a lot of burglary and car theft. Most of the reported crime now is domestic or between gangsters or drunk tourists.

(As far as I'm concerned, the gangsters can all snuff each other and the cops can arrest the last one standing.)

Later: Sheesh. I typed this, then went out to get a newspaper. Headline: "Husband of UTMB dean attacked by masked men"

The man went out to walk the dog in the evening and was jumped by three men at the bottom of the stairs. (This is on the west end, where most homes are on stilts.) One man made a comment about the victim's wife, implying a connection to layoffs at UTMB.

This is precisely the type of upscale neighborhood where people don't expect this kind of thing to happen.

It sounds like they could have used a more territorial dog.

Everything in that area is changing. Houses that sold for $50,000 ten years ago are double that today. A lot of expensive new housing is going up. You might not recognize it.

I guess I used the word affluent to imply that Dickinson doesn't have much in the way of crime pockets.

Interesting story.

I've only been living in Texas 10 years, but the reputation of Huntsville is infamous. I was thinking of those privately operated prisons. I read about one where the inmates were making so much trouble with eating utensils that they were fed mush in a paper cup three times a day.

I've never been inside a prison except for a mini-"Scared Straight" thing in high school. One guy (probably a set-up) was reaching through the bars at us and taking about "fresh meat."

This is a state crime, and Texas does not have any "pansy" prisons.

All we know at this point is from a police report. I'll be watching for further news.

P.S.: I googled the name of the physician, Wameeth Fadhli. He was born and raised in the U.S., is married, and has children. He is a pediatrician. Not the profile of your typical loner who goes off the deep end.

I can understand criminals going to the good side of town because that's where the money is (not much point robbing poor people). And I can understand revenge, even though it's deplorable. But a physician assaulting someone at random is just incomprehensible and about the last thing you expect.

Random, unprovoked violence

A 22-year-old Dickinson man was riding his bicycle around 7:20 p.m. Tuesday when a vehicle pulled alongside and the driver fired numerous shots from a pistol. The man was hit twice and taken to UTMB hospital for treatment.

Witnesses helped identify the vehicle, and police arrested Dr. Wameeth Fadhli, age 33, a UTMB physician. The doctor had no criminal history.

There was no apparent reason for the assault.

I'm a big fan of "not being there," but something like this is unavoidable. Dickinson is a fairly affluent suburb southeast of Houston, and has little violent crime aside from domestic disputes.
