The Catholic church has an ancient tradition of not carrying weapons in church. I don't think it's in the canon law (I actually did look before posting). It's just a tradition.
At one time, even a criminal could not be forcibly removed from a sanctuary.
I am a Catholic, BTW.
A church in Galveston has a red sign outside the door which I read for years as saying "This is a no gun zone. Leave your gun in your car." One day I took a second look. It says gum, not gun. So I guess you can carry there.

But many churches have a doctrine against carrying weapons or engaging in any violence in church. The Catholic church is one.
