Setting up a news alert might be overkill. As I said, there are literally hundreds of incidents a day. Many of them involve domestic abuse or criminals attacking other criminals or the police, and it's easy to dismiss those as the kind of thing that an honest citizen would not get involved in.
BTW, I just noticed that the OP got his license three days ago. The wife will probably get used to the situation in a short while.

I have posted dozens (or maybe hundreds by now) of news stories about people who were attacked in all sorts of places, including their own homes, churches, hospitals, and private offices. Most of them are in the Off Topic forum.

The point that is difficult for many people to understand is that you can go your entire life without using a weapon to defend yourself; but when you need one, nothing else will do.
