Not quite, if you want to nitpick (and who doesn't? ;-) ).

Penal Code 46.03 makes it illegal to carry in a school unless the school administration allows it. A private employer would have to post 30.06 signs or otherwise give notice to make carrying in the workplace an offense.

However, the net effect is the same.

Re: Harrold school district to staff: Pack your pistols

The law is 18 U.S.C. § 922(q). Here's one source: http://trac.syr.edu/laws/18/18USC00922.html

This is the relevant text:
(B) Subparagraph (A) does not apply to the possession of a firearm -
(i) on private property not part of school grounds;
(ii) if the individual possessing the firearm is licensed to do
so by the State in which the school zone is located or a
political subdivision of the State, and the law of the State or
political subdivision requires that, before an individual obtains
such a license, the law enforcement authorities of the State or
political subdivision verify that the individual is qualified
under law to receive the license;

Re: Harrold school district to staff: Pack your pistols

Yes. CHL holders are exempt from the federal "gun-free school zone." There are some fine points, like you have to have a license from the state where you reside, and you are exempt only in the state where you reside.

Re: Harrold school district to staff: Pack your pistols

I saw Mr. Thweatt on TV. He's good. He looks like a military officer. The "anti" guy that CNN ran opposite him didn't stand a chance.

The discussion got me thinking: Lots of antis have been complaining about the Heller decision, saying that states and cities should have the "right" to ban weapons. Too bad they don't see the flip side: localities have the power to allow their citizens to do what they see best for their own welfare.

Re: Harrold school district to staff: Pack your pistols

Since the district must have a written policy to allow weapons in its buildings, and all such documents are open to public view, I doubt any school district has a secret policy.

There is always some nut on the school board or in the administration who would raise Cain.

You can certainly e-mail the gentleman if you feel moved to do so, but I'm betting his mailbox has been full since last week.

It wouldn't hurt to vent to the local media.

Re: Harrold school district to staff: Pack your pistols

I do not favor making the right to keep and bear arms conditional, but if we refuse to acknowledge political reality, we will accomplish nothing. If this is what it takes to get a foot in the door, so be it.

Planning and training increase the probability that you will respond to a situation effectively. Without them, you risk responding by instinct, reflex, and perhaps panic.

Everyone who deals with emergencies -- the military, police, firemen, EMTs, medical personnel -- train for as many situations as they can imagine. When your training kicks in, you do not waste time thinking through a situation at a time when clear thinking is difficult.
