Seriously, to truly have a "badge" one must have an object that is
1) assigned by an authority in a position to validate the credentials of that person,
2) is consistently identifiable and recognizable to those who need to recognize it, and
3) is used as identification under specific, defined circumstances.
I'm sure that we could come up with other criteria, but the bottom line is that it is used for personal identification and must be assigned, thus identifying the person with a specific organization. Self-assigned identifying items have no more importance than a business card.
I.e., it's no more effective than the toy badges we used to have as kids.
