A house robber has been shot dead in Alberton, south of Johannesburg, police said on Thursday.

With no burglary alarm, Mr. Ardrey had to get creative. He took soda cans and placed them behind the doors.


"Whenever the door would open, these pop cans would come across the cement and make noise, and that's what would wake me up because I was in a sound sleep," Ardrey said, demonstrating the disruptive noise the can made.


That make-shift alarm had him ready to meet the intruder.

"So I told them, 'You boys come in this office,' I said, 'I've got a ride coming for you,' and they sat down right here," he said, pointing to a bench in the office.


By Oklahoma Law, Ardrey could have shot and killed the men with no consequence. The arresting officer reminded them of that.
