Gonna have another within 6 months, I may have to be at that event
(SIA, I looked for White Stetson in the Video, only saw a black one, maybe next time you'll get on TV )
I liked that part of the video where the Officer points at one pistol and says "That could hide in a front pocket, no one would know it was there"
Apparently advertising something like a Davis as being good for concealed carry?
I'm wondering about that guy who admitted on TV that he sold his brother's guns ... if his brother can now get them back from the police, or if he needs to sue his brother for the actual value of the guns, or if he can file a police report on the "missing guns" and get them back? .... I doubt his brother's homeowner's insurance would pay, but what if he filed a stolen property police report now, I guess since it was "no questions asked" they'd have to investigate? Wonder if they'd return the "stolen guns" to the rightful owner? Does the brother get to keep the money from the police after they are returned to the rightful owner, his brother? ... interesting.
I wonder if after the investigation, the DA would accept criminal charges against the brother selling someone else's property, since he made an admission against interest publicly on TV, I'd guess that video would be admissible as evidence.

they are advertising it as "no questions asked" so it would surprise me if they asked for ID

Makes me wish I had an old beater to trade in.

Re: Groceries for guns
I can't see that it is obstructing justice, and Police buying guns with money from another party, isn't part of their normal duties ...
Dunno what is across the street though .... sure wouldn't want to trespass ...
Perhaps I'd carry a notebook and pen and a Press badge, I'm sure some reporters would be there, and I dunno any law against me askin' anyone what's in the bag and if they say rusted pistol/water pistol or whatever I'd say ok ... if they say Glock 26 and a 1911 ... I'd consider dropping some cash on the ground and see what happens. But, it's doubtful IMHO, that anything worth $100.00 will show up there.... So, I'll probably be fishing or kayaking or something.

Re: Groceries for guns
Yeah I'm torn, I would go the 50 miles ... but also there's the Great Castell Kayak Race and/or some other events I want to go to more that day. If I thought they'd actually have any decent ones show up,I'd be there, or if I had a bunch of cheap fake guns I spent lless than $10.00 on, I'd be there ... actually if I hadn't traded a Grendel that accidently sat in a bucket of water in a shed for 8 years and was nuttin-but-rust inside such that the slide wouldn't rack and no part moved.... I'd be there to get my hundred bucks for it ....jecsd1 wrote:Guys/Gals,
I know it's been largely a comical attitude regarding this program but I'm not sure how I feel about all this. Part of me wants to drive the 30 miles down there and sit across the street in the bed of my pickup truck with a sign that says "I beat any competitors offer on guns" but the other half of me wants the sign to say "TEXAS! Keep your guns! They want you to disarm!" Does anyone feel similar or am I over thinking this? What kind of message does this send to the public? "Guns are bad. Trust the Police to defend you. You don't need guns." Or is this actually a good thing? Opinions please.
ps. I'm in if anyone wants to do something worthwhile about this.

Re: Groceries for guns
if you get some play-doh or modelling clay and make an additional pistol grip on the stock on your .22, in some states it would then be an "assault rifle" and qualify for $200.00 Not sure if a short dowel rod and long screw would qualify or not. You'll probably need to spray paint the stock black so it looks scary to get the $200 "assault rifle" price. ...surprise_i'm_armed wrote:Just called and tried to get someone in Austin PD at this hour, no luck.
During the hours of 7A-5P, I will be calling the APD Public Information
Office at 512-974-5017, to get more details.
I've seen some reports that this gun buyback will be in CASH and some
that make me think that they will give you a debit card for groceries,
but none say what grocery store chain.
If the card is for some grocery chain around me in North Texas, I may
just take the 220 mile run down to Austin, trade in a broken .22 rifle that
I have, and visit my son. That $100 would pay for the bulk of my trip.
But if the grocery chain is HEB, no trip, since we don't have HEB up here.
SIA
I used to have a 50 round SKS "deer rifle" in a "non-assault rifle" stock and also used to own a "Camp Carbine" and also some rifles typically associated with hunting in "assault rifle stocks" back when the construction material and stock determined if it was a hunting or an assault rifle (Didn't matter what cartridge it used nor what type gun it was. lol )
So, if you get $200.00 and those are HEB Coupons, you can buy an ice chest for the trip back, and still have a little cash left over.

I gotta say though, if any are found to be stolen and returned to their rightful owners, I appreciate GACC funding that.
If however, they buy stolen guns and destroy them instead of returning them ... that's depriving someone of their property, destruction of property, receiving stolen property ... etc etc etc

Re: Groceries for guns
Why they didn't say "sell?
They probably wanted to avoid the appearance of having a gunshow since they closed one down?
Still, I dunno anything that would prevent others from bidding $50 higher in these face to face transactions.
If the church parking lot is posted, I guess we'd need to keep one foot off their property if carrying, since "Entry" means the entire body?
I"m not up on church parking lot property 30.06 law since I've never seen such a thing and ... mind is elsewhere today.
The nature of this gun show appears to be most attractive to face to face sales, I doubt many FFL/Dealers will attend since I don't see info on how to rent a table there

Re: "carrying around" after purchase and "open carry" questions.
1) they are concealed in paper bags, not open carried. See the link to the advertisement. http://media2.myfoxaustin.com/ktbcmisc/ ... ersion.PDF" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
2) Don't "carry it around" if you don't have a CHL, take it to your car ...I fail to see any difference in carrying it to your car to conceal it in your car, after a purchase in a parking lot or after a purchase in a gun store .... both are Sec. 46.02."directly en route to a motor vehicle that is owned by the person or under the person's control"
Sec. 46.02. UNLAWFUL CARRYING WEAPONS. (a) A person commits an offense if the person intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly carries on or about his or her person a handgun, illegal knife, or club if the person is not:
(1) on the person's own premises or premises under the person's control; or
(2) inside of or directly en route to a motor vehicle that is owned by the person or under the person's control.
Of course that's for handguns only ... not your $250.00 to $400.00 "Assault rifle" which you could open carry if you don't do anything to get a disorderly conduct charge.
I have bought guns directly in front of Police Officers before with no problems at gun stores and gun shows.
In fact, I'd probably feel safer purchasing a gun, or groceries, directly in front of a police officer who could keep watch while I'm distracted by counting money etc.
What I'll wonder about is if there is an increase in Home Burglaries between now and then so crackheads/methheads etc can get some inventory to sell to these people offering to fence weapons for them.
I certainly wouldn't buy stolen property (that's illegal, unless you are Austin P.D. I guess?) I'd be looking for the anti-gun person who inherited a relatives collection after he passed away and wants to sell them.
Anyone going to notify the State Police that Austin P.D. may be buying stolen property with intention to keep it instead of returning them to the rightful owners? I bet pawnbrokers/individuals would get in BIG trouble for that.

I have to be in North Texas then, but I like your suggeston, I'd be there cash in hand outbidding them on anything decent.... and cash they can buy diapers or clothing or pay a utility bill with so they can have air conditioning ... not just grocery coupons.

Re: Groceries for guns
Police are also including fake guns in the buy back (but only giving $10.00 each for them)
Better hurry, costumeattic already sold out of the $5.40 Pirate Flintlock Water Pistol
http://www.costumeattic.com/detail/DI-1 ... istol.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The Austin Police Department has formed a partnership to offer citizens coupons for groceries in exchange for guns. Austin Police are hoping the new gun buy back program will get weapons off the street and reduce crime.
Police are also including fake guns in the buy back program because they have seen a trend of criminals using them in robberies.
So for BB guns and air guns, a person will get ten dollars. For handguns and rifles, they will receive $100. For assault rifles, they will receive $200.
Police want to make sure those interested follow certain guidelines. The gun must be unloaded and guns and ammunition must be in separate bags.
Guns for groceries starts on June 5 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. It is located at the Austin Conerstone Church at 1101 Reinli Street.
The money is coming from the Greater Austin Crime Commission.
