Re: Write in primary for write in candidate.

Here are some interesting numbers.

The Budget of the United States Government, Fiscal Year 2012

Provides for the following:

Egypt $1.5 billion

Afghanistan $3.9 billion

Pakistan $3.1 billion)

Israel $3 billion

Total $11.5 billion = $11,500,000,000 for just these five countries.

That works out to $36.86 per person for every man, woman and child in the U.S. for just these five countries.

The budget provides $12.5 billion for Social Security.

It provides $47 billion for the Department of State and the U.S. Agency for International Development.

I need a drink. :grumble

In case I was a little vague, my point with the above numbers was that the budget provides almost as much foreign aid for five countries as it does for Social Security.

And Social Security is going to go broke? I can’t figure this out.

I still need a drink.

Re: Write in primary for write in candidate.

I will expand on one solution I mentioned in a prior post on this thread. I stated “Illegal Immigration could be stopped by putting first time offenders in jail for two years and then sending them back”. Second time offenders should do five years and so on. This would serve to make the risk outweigh the reward and stop most of the illegal immigration.

Those businesses that are found to be employing illegal immigrants should not only have to pay a large fine, but company management should face criminal prosecution and jail time.

I am sure I will get flamed for this but I would not vote for Perry because he kept quiet while Arizona faced criticism and “boycotts” from other states for their laws on illegal immigration. He probably did not want to risk losing the “Hispanic” vote.

Most people do not know this but most Americans of Mexican decent that have been U.S. citizens for generations (and voters) would like to see illegal immigration curtailed. It hurts them too, and probably more so than the average person.

I did not want to get stuck on this one issue. There are a boat load of problems this country needs to tackle but the politicians need to be forced to do what is right.

Jim,

If we have a problem, any problem, it will never be solved by taking the attitude “it can’t be done”. The only way it can be solved is by discussing “how can we do it?”.

You tell me something that you think will work and we can start from there.

I saw a billboard that said “if you want to see something happen, tell a Texan it can’t be done”. I love it. :thumbs2: :patriot: :txflag:

Re: Write in primary for write in candidate.

Child pornography and child prostitution are demand driven and have been around for a long time but that doesn’t relieve society of the responsibility to fight it and try as much as possible to stop it.

I suppose the point I am trying to make is that we haven’t lost a fight until we become convinced we can’t win. Once we become convinced we can’t change the government, we give the government permission to totally control us. Once we become convinced we can’t change things, we give ourselves permission not to try.

Slavery was demand driven and had been around forever but due to determination and tenacity it was stopped.

As a country we have lost the will to stand up for what is right and fight that which is wrong. We have been convinced that right and wrong is just a matter of perspective. Minorities have become empowered and the majority has been marginalized.

We have been convinced there is nothing we can do.

Well I refuse to believe that. :mad5

seamusTX wrote:People will take whatever opportunity they can get to sneak into the country, smuggle drugs, or otherwise commit crimes.

What I'm trying to say is that if the U.S. could completely eliminate all illegal border crossing from Mexico, the flow would go elsewhere. It always does. Island nations like Australia and New Zealand have illegal immigration and drug smuggling. Nobody is walking there or paddling a kayak.

This problem has been going on through the Clinton, George W. Bush, and Obama administrations, with Republican and Democratic control of the house and senate. It has defied every attempt to stop it.

The reason is that Americans want to employ cheap labor and don't care about legality. I know people in real life who say they can't hire a native-born American to work on roofs or do drywall. ICE has busted plants that employed hundreds of illegals for jobs like butchering chickens.

It's not just Mexicans, either. There barely is a convenience store or motel owned by native-born Americans. Most of them are operated by Asians. Why do I have a feeling all their paperwork might not pass muster?

Illegal immigration and drugs, along with gambling, prostitution, and obscene pornography, are demand-driven problems. They have been with us through all of recorded history. Even in countries where they execute offenders, they can always find more offenders.

- Jim
Then are we to accept the crime and corrupiton that go along with these activities?

I wish I could remember who said "That which we tolerate, we condone".

Re: Write in primary for write in candidate.

Jim,

I have to disagree with you on part of your statement. I was a Sheriff’s Deputy in South Texas, a good friend I patrolled with is now the Police Chief of a small town in South Texas and my Son has two good friends that are Border Patrol.

While a sizeable amount of drugs are seized and a number of Illegal Immigrants are stopped at places such as the Sarita checkpoint and elsewhere, there is still a large number of Illegal Immigrants that come across the border and walk to pick up points to be transported by vehicle north. There is still a lot of drugs that cross the border on the backs of “mules”. There is a lot of crime committed in South Texas by Illegal Immigrants on foot.

Illegal Immigration could be stopped by putting first time offenders in jail for two years and then sending them back. Now they are just put on busses and taken back to Mexico and many are back in the U.S. within 48 hours.

Most people don’t know how much crime is committed on this side of the border due to the drug traffic and Illegal immigration. Murders related to drug trafficking many times are not reported as such. Homes are broken into and people robbed by illegal immigrants. If you work out in the brush country, you had better be on your toes and carry. When I was with the Sheriff’s Department, a 13 year old girl was raped and killed by an illegal immigrant in her home. We caught him.

I could tell you stories you wouldn’t believe about a Police Chief sent to prison for being involved in drug trafficking and lawyers arrested for financing drug trafficking.

I just wonder how long before people say enough.

Re: Write in primary for write in candidate.

It is true the president can’t write laws or amend the constitution. But a popular president that is a true leader can wield a lot of political power over congress. The president can also take unilateral action on some things without even consulting congress.

If we had a president that had the courage and was a true leader, he would have immediately dispatched Navy Seals to recover the body of David Hartley in Falcon Lake, and warned the government of Mexico not to interfere. He would also send enough troops to the border to stop the flow of drugs across the border.

The problem we now have in this country is that the politicians of both parties do not really care about the country. All they really care about is image and getting re-elected. Their first loyalty is to the party and not to the country.

We have troops dying in Iraq and Afghanistan. We are involved in Libya and concerned about events in Pakistan. Meanwhile we have a situation building in a country we share a border with that threatens to tear that country apart.

We need a change in elected representatives and leaders, not just two parties with the same old goals.

It may be time for independent candidates to run. Google “polls both parties” and look through the items that come up.

Re: Write in primary for write in candidate.

seamusTX wrote:Here's another way of looking at it:

The majority of Americans who are eligible to vote don't vote, or maybe they come out in presidential election years and vote only for president and a few other candidates with high name recognition. They may stay home and gripe, call talk shows, or whatever; but the situation does not affect them enough to make any effort to change it.

The citizens who do vote and otherwise engage in the political process generally send mixed signals to Congress and to state* and local government. If you look at national elections since 2000, Gore won the popular vote (though of course he did not win the electoral vote—it was a squeaker), W got a solid majority in 2004, and Obama got a solid majority in 2008. The House changed party control twice in that period, and the Senate once.

Pretty much the same people voted. Granted some die, some new voters come of age, some stay home or come out for a particular election for their own reasons.

The only clear message that comes out of these oscillations is that the voters are dissatisfied. I think they are mainly unhappy with unemployment and the lame economy. Again, when you look back at history from the 1930s to the present, that is pretty much what triggered all changes in party control.

Everyone wants to cut the deficit until their own personal sacred cow is threatened. For example farm subsidies will never end while Iowa has such a huge influence on candidate selection.

One man or woman serving as president, however principled, is not going to change this situation (at least IMHO).

*This is not the case in Texas. The Republicans have held all state-wide offices and the legislature since about 1999.

- Jim
I have thought about it and you are right on many points. I suppose I am the eternal optimist though because I believe this country will eventually do what is necessary. You do not see demonstrations in the streets because the majority of people that recognize the need for those changes I mentioned are not the type of people that take to the streets with a sign unless the situation becomes intolerable.

We are on the very edge of some very dark times and our “leaders” don’t seem the least bit interested in putting the country above politics. Things will change. It’s just a matter of how bad the situation will get before people say enough.

Well I suppose a country must go through tough times every now and then in order for people to get their priorities sorted out.

I cannot accept that people cannot and will not change because that would be giving up on the country and people.

seamusTX wrote:I think the people can change the direction of government, but a large enough segment of the demographic in certain states needs to want the same goals. Probably the most recent time that happened was the so-called Reagan Revolution, which was a reaction to the economic stagnation and seeming impotence of the U.S. in the 1970s.

As it is now, Congress oscillates back and forth between Democratic and Republican control, and a few senior officials go in and out of power. California, Illinois, and New York balance Texas, Florida, and the rest of the southern states in electoral and congressional power.

I understand that you would like to see an end to that, but what is the common goal of the American people?

- Jim
"The significant problems we face cannot be solved at the same level of thinking we were at when we created them." - Albert Einstein

When there is a problem to be solved “why it can’t be done” will never work. “How can we do it” is a better approach.

You stated “I understand that you would like to see an end to that, but what is the common goal of the American people?”

I believe the majority of the American people want the government to:

Stop the flood of illegal immigrants coming across the border.
Stop the flood of drugs coming across the border.
Reign in the deficit spending.
Wind down our military presence in Iraq and Afghanistan and stop playing world cop.

Now these four would be a good start and I believe a large majority of the American people would agree all four are goals that need to be achieved.

Some time ago I was watching the news about some crisis and a reporter was interviewing people about it. The piece ended with an anchor person saying “tell us what you would like to hear President Obama say” I immediately thought “I don’t want to hear him say anything, I want him to do something”.

Each goal above has at least one solution. The question is “how can the American people get the government to do it”?

It is well past the time for the people and the government to stop blaming others and start thinking “How can we do it”.

Re: Write in primary for write in candidate.

The discussion generated by the original post is great. It gives one a lot to think about.

The premise of the original post is; How else can the people peacefully let the politicians know we are fed up with “politics as usual”?

We need them to stop with the political posturing and party line horse hockey to do what is necessary to fix the serious problems in this country now.

TAM: I consider General Petraeus thoroughly admirable. I don't know whether he would be willing to run and serve as President or how he would govern.

I sometimes think anyone willing to run for office should automatically be excluded as a candidate, but I can't think of what else to do. When the ancient Roman electorate lived in one town and all knew each other, they nominated people who did not campaign for office. That's what VoiceofReason is asking for, but I think that is impractical in a country the size and complexity of the U.S.

I'll also point out that most contested elections have margins in the 54-44% range or closer (with some votes going to third-party candidates). That means nearly half the electorate does not favor the winner. Only a few presidential elections have had margins as wide as 60-40. One was Nixon in 1972 (60.7-37.5%, to be exact).

seamusTX wrote:P.S.: Neither Congress nor the President can "run the economy." GDP growth and employment/unemployment have gone up and down regardless of the party in power, tax policies, and fiscal policies (tight money, loose credit, etc.).

If you take a long view of history, from the eighteenth century to the 1930s, the American economy (even before there was a U.S. federal government) was a roller-coaster of booms, busts, panics, and fiscal crises. In some cases the federal government had to be bailed out by private parties like J.P. Morgan. Personal or corporate bankruptcy used to be a situation that compelled people to commit suicide or go to the territories and change their name.

For all the rhetoric from my esteemed representative Ron Paul and others, the Federal Reserve Bank and other fiscal policies have stabilized the economy. As bad as it is now, we don't have "Hoovervilles" or homeless Okies looking for a place to go as in The Grapes of Wrath yet.
