I know you're reluctant to get a 22lr as your first rifle and I assume it's because you're not taking it's firepower seriously. If your range allows you to do so, make a big block of jello (it's kinda like "ballistic gelating") and shoot at it with "super sniper subsonic (sss)" 22lr ammo. It is highly penetrating and will tumble for maximum stopping power, kinda like .223/5.56. Get a bolt action, not a 10/22 because semi-auto guns will not cycle some of the specialty .22lr ammo such as sss ammo. BTW, sss ammo is not only powerful, but nearly silent because there is no sonic boom as the bullet travels through the air since the bulet is subsonic. It is highly penetrating because it is very heavy.
