If you apply for a CHL, then find out you are ineligible, they are clear about NOT refunding.
Actually, the 'law' has always required NRA cert (or equivalent). They just started enforcing it. We should be appreciative they let us slide for 18 years.
If you get stopped for speeding and ask the LEO why he did not stop the other people that were speeding, guess how for that argument would go. :)

Re: Got an email from DPS today about Instructor Renewal
Why should they refund our renewal payment? Just make extra work for them and us.
The 'assumption' you have made is the renewal for instructors is limited to 6 months before the instructor certificate expires (12/31). That is a wrong assumption. A CHL cannot be renewed more than 6 months early BECAUSE the attached CHL-100 has to be w/i 6 months. That does not apply to instructors. I don't know how early you can renew your instructor's certificate (or your d/l for that matter). i know you can renew your d/l 6 to 8 months early (then, DPS may suspend it with out notifying you. :().
They are real busy, processing new apps, watching new legislation, preparing new courses, lesson plans, tests (2, including a 100 item test for instructors), preparing for renewal courses for instructors.... Small wonder we have not heard from them.
I'm glad they took/kept my money. Should put me at the front of the line for the instructor renewal classes.
It will be real easy for them to verify we are NRA certified. All they need is to log into the NRA training site and check. No need to 'work with us'. Now, if you are claiming a nationally recognized class - lots of luck. They probably will need to contact/work w/you. :)

Re: Got an email from DPS today about Instructor Renewal
Originally, if you were already teaching handgun courses, you only had to take a 28 hour course. You got to go home Wed afternoon. I did not realize that applied to NRA certified instructors too. :(

Re: Got an email from DPS today about Instructor Renewal
Tom Givens @ Rangemasters in Memphis offers a 3 day 'instructor course'.
Just because you were trained by Givens (or Suarez), does NOT mean that you have to train all your students to that level. Just have to hold regular training.
Incidentally, I understand that Suarez does NOT teach you to keep you finger outside the trigger guard (along the frame) like most instructors. For that reason, I'd be reluctant to train w/him.
