I was in the Coast Guard for 20 years and retired. It has made everything possible for the rest of my life, jobs, school, training, experience and health care. While I have been out for a while, I try to keep up as much as possible. I heard that they adopted the Sig 229 recently and they have a variety of other weaponry, such as the Barret for stopping drug smuggling boats, M60's, and M16's. I have heard the new ships will have a Phalanx gun and some of the ones deployed in the Persian Gulf already do. Yes we are there too. Tell your son I also am proud of his choice and wish him well in his service.
Cool, I will pass that along to him!

Why is North Carolina hard adventure? I can see Alaska and the berring straights being hard but what does NC have?

Also various other weapons as mentioned (M16, M60) depending on what vehicle/craft is being utilized, RHI (rigid hull inflatable)), 'cape' class cutter, medium endurance cutters, or the big 400' icebreakers. Or whatever is being flown. Could get to learn a variety of small arms through big guns.

It is a wonder the USCG isn't totally confused, treasury, war department, navy, transportation department, homeland security. Sort of like being an ugly stepchild.

He is going to love being in Cape May for basic. Afterwards, request assignments (as they come up) in hawaii 14th district, galveston 8th district, or puerto rico 7th district for just great settings. Sector north carolina 5th district for hard adventure, alaska 17th district for way hard adventure. Whatever people like to say about the USCG, there is a long and proud history, from 1790, through service in viet nam, to the present. Best wishes - Semper Paratus (and) Essayons.
Great Info, Thanks! I'll pass it along to him.

CG is a good gig if you aren't tied down or have an understanding family. They're the "5th Branch" ;)

Just looked it up, they chose the P229 in .40, DAK model.

Coast Guard

Well, for one thing I am a very proud Dad today. My 22 year old son leaves for New Jersey headed for Boot Camp, he has joined the Coast Guard. I was curious what firearms the CG uses and what he will be training on? Any one familar with them?
