I've had a few conversations with those that "just don't get it" as well.
I ask them, "Well, do you have a fire extinguisher in your home?" Most will answer, "Yes, of course." I ask, "Why? The chance of there being a fire in your house is really remote." They will usually answer, "Yeah, but you never know. Better safe than sorry." to which I reply, "Exactly, better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it, huh?! What would you do if someone kicked your front door in at 3am and your family is asleep inside? Wouldn't you want a fighting chance to live if they are armed and intent on harm, and wouldn't you want the same for your family? If the good guys had no defensive tools, then only criminals would have guns. How would that be?"
