Re: Prepaid legal services for CHL holders....

My problem with [Pre-paid legal service] was their contract terms. It is an at will contract that may be "terminated by the Firm for whatever reason" Article VI (1) of their terms of contract. If I'm retaining an attorney he better have a good reason for dropping me as client (nonpayment, conflict of interest, etc.) and not just because he doesn't want to represent me after getting my money. Now there is a penalty for the Firm withdrawing... the client agrees "to the lesser amount of the sum of three (3) months of the Micro Retainer amount and any incurred fees, or the sum of the amount actually earned under this contract and unearned fees." Sounds like if you get dropped after paying in your first years payments you agree to the liquidated damage sum of $32.85.

Will you be dropped by the Firm for no reason? Possibly not, but the incentive to sign up as many people as possible and drop any that look like financial losses and still make over $100 a head seems questionable. I do know that even though their representatives insist this would never happen, they wouldn't strike the terms from their contract when asked to.

Bottom line, if prepaid legal services make you feel more secure then maybe it's worth the money for peace of mind. But, I wouldn't rely on it providing much more than that fleeting feeling. Just my 2 cents.
