Re: 15 year old in NM shoots 5 - here we go again
I agree. When my kids were growing up, I did not allow any violent games or R rated movies in my home. Actually, they have been grown for many years and I still do not have these things in my home, nor do I pay money to see them at the theater. However, I was always frustrated to learn their friends saw them and described them in detail to my children. When my children visited others, they saw them in their homes. When kids came to visit my children, they often brought these movies and games with them and I would have to play mommie cop. I don't know what you do to insulate your kids from a world where most adults think there is nothing wrong with these things. I was viewed as an "overprotective" mom by the parents whom I tried to discuss my concerns with.

Yeah, but getting Hollywood and the gaming industry to admit it and police themselves is like getting the Tobacco industry to stop selling cigarettes.

Re: 15 year old in NM shoots 5 - here we go again
Portions of the kid's written confession have been made public. On the news today, it was reported that he wrote the moment he first began to plan to murder his mother and sister was after watching the movie "Halloween" in which a young man murders his family without remorse. The kid said he felt he would be the same way.
So he identified with the murderer in a horrific movie. This is what we can't seem to get the movie and gaming industry to accept. Normal people identify with the victims of things like this, but those who are either mentally ill or developing mental illness (or just plain evil) identify with the one doing the killing. I saw an advertisement for a new Sly Stallone movie being made. It's called "Bullet to the Head". It made me sick to even see the previews. We do not need movies with titles like this much less it being the subject of an entire movie.![banghead :banghead:](./images/smilies/banghead.gif)

Re: 15 year old in NM shoots 5 - here we go again
Latest report I have seen is this kid was not on any medications, had no mental illness "history", and no one in the family reports anything amiss. Mental illness often shows up shortly after puberty in the mid-teens. That would fit. Again, when you partner a person whose mental state is deteriorating with violent video games, that person can become far more desensitized to violent behavior than a normal person. When will the gaming industry be willing to accept maybe we have too much bloodshed in these games.

Re: 15 year old in NM shoots 5 - here we go again
The 15 year old also planned to murder people at Walmart. He was criminally insane by any definition. He stated he planned this a long time and his 12 year old girlfriend knew he had murdered his mother all day and did nothing.
Here is an article that details what he did. It was cold blooded in the extreme. I was disturbed to even read it. The depth of this kid's mental illness is evident. I too, would like to know if he was on psychotropic medications. He was completely un-remorseful and emotionless in describing his acts to investigators except for one thing. The most emotion he showed to investigators was in describing how much he loved violent video games. He admitted he had been planning and thinking of murdering for quite a while. His reason? He was "frustrated" with his mother. That's it. Notice the guns were unsecured in his parent's closet. Could he have done the same murders with a knife, or hammer, yes, so I am not saying a gun safe would have saved his family's lives. The media will not make this distinction, though.
